Allison Janney wins best supporting actress at SAG Awards
Allison Janney overshadowed her feathered costar at the SAG Awards on Sunday.
Janney took home the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her performance in I, Tonya at the 24th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night.
The decorated actress took the stage and thanked her fellow nominees before honoring her castmates, especially Margot Robbie, whom she called “so fearless and brave and such a rock star.”
She concluded by thanking her friend, screenwriter Steven Rogers, for writing the role for her. “Thank god for friendship,” she said.
In the darkly comedic, semi-autobiographical tale of figure-skating Olympian Tonya Harding’s rise and fall, Janney portrays LaVona Golden, Harding’s abusive mother who spends much of her on-screen time yelling at a pet parakeet perched on her shoulder. Her methods for helping her daughter (played by Margot Robbie) are more than a little unorthodox and mostly down-right cruel. Craig Gillespie directed the film, for which Robbie also received a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.
Previously, Janney twice won the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for her roles in American Beauty (1999) and The Help (2011).
The actress beat out Mary J. Blige (Mudbound), Hong Chau (Downsizing), Holly Hunter (The Big Sick), and Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird) for the award.
