Allison Janney Pitches ‘West Wing’ Reboot With New Actors

From 1999 to 2006, Allison Janney played Press Secretary C.J. Cregg on The West Wing, and she was perhaps the best woman to ever hold the job… well, maybe except for Melissa McCarthy’s hilarious portrayal of Sean Spicer.

Variety recently interviewed Janney about the brilliant Aaron Sorkin series and the potential for more episodes. “Everyone wants to, but really, how could we do that? We’re all too old!” Janney joked. “They could do it with a whole new cast, and Aaron should. I know everyone fell in love with our characters, and I love that, but it seems like West Wing should be filled with young, idealistic, visionary people. Maybe, I don’t know, they could give us some other jobs in the White House.”

Since the show bowed in May 2006, Janney and the cast have reunited a few times, once for a 2012 political ad for Michigan Supreme Court Justice Bridget Mary McCormack, the sister of Mary McCormack, who played Kate Harper on The West Wing. Janney even once stood in for President Obama’s Press Secretary Josh Earnest at an actual White House briefing.

Another reunion or reboot seems especially appropriate in our current political climate. As Janney told Variety, “But gosh, it would be just a great time for West Wing now, for whoever is disillusioned by what’s going on today.” Many of those who feel that disillusionment have turned to binge-watching episodes of the original series, as Vice found by studying Google Trends. There were two rather large spikes first during the election, then another during the inauguration.
