Allison Janney to Headline ‘Six Degrees of Separation’ on Broadway

Allison Janney will lead the cast of a Broadway revival of “Six Degrees of Separation” this spring, co-starring with John Benjamin Hickey in a new production of the 1990 John Guare play.

Janney, the “Mom” and “The West Wing” Emmy winner, last appeared on Broadway in the 2009 musical “9 to 5.” In “Six Degrees” she’ll play Ouisa, the wealthy Manhattanite who, with her husband, is taken in by a con man claiming to be Sidney Poitier’s son. Hickey (“Manhattan”), a 2011 Tony winner for “The Normal Heart,” will play Ouisa’s husband, Flan.

Trip Cullman, the Off Broadway veteran who’s also directing the Broadway transfer of “Significant Other” this season, directs. The original production of “Six Degrees,” directed by Jerry Zaks, bowed Off Broadway at Lincoln Center Theater prior to a 14-month Broadway run. Fred Schepisi’s 1993 movie adaptation starred Stockard Channing, reprising the part she originated, and Donald Sutherland.

Produced by Stuart Thompson (“King Charles III”) and Tim Levy, “Six Degrees” will play a 15-week run at the Barrymore Theater, where it will open in April. Complete cast, exact dates and other details remain to be set.

Janney joins a slate of notable actresses appearing in Broadway plays this season, including Diane Lane, who stars in the just-opened staging of “The Cherry Orchard”; Sally Fields in an upcoming “The Glass Menagerie”; and Cate Blanchett in “The Present.”
