The driver, a 30-year-old area man, was unconscious and trapped inside the vehicle. He was extricated from the vehicle and life saving measures were performed but the man did not survive.

Police believe the driver was traveling northbound on Sixth Street when he lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle then left the roadway and struck a large tree. The driver's name is being withheld until family can be notified.

The crash is still under investigation, but the sheriff's office said "it appears that seat belt use and alcohol were possible contributing factors."

The sheriff's office was assisted by the Michigan State Police, Plainwell Department of Public Safety, Martin Fire Department and Wayland EMS.
