All the Records 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Has Smashed (So Far)

Well, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has officially passed $1 billion globally, and in record time. The next big goal is, of course, becoming highest-grossing movie of all time. In the meantime, we broke down all the records it has destroyed and who got left in the dust.

On opening day, Star Wars made an estimated $120 million, beating previous record holder Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 by $30 million.

Next we move up to top weekend gross of all time. Star Wars, of course, won by beating out Jurassic World’s record by $4 million, making $529 million globally.

Now let’s talk Christmas weekend, which is a big movie moneymaker. Star Wars now holds the record and totally demolished previous record holder Sherlock Holmes with $49.3 million … basically doubling that film’s total.

And now the lofty $1 billion mark. Star Wars just barely made it to be the fastest to $1 billion in 12 days, beating the record by only one day. The previous record was set by, again, Jurassic World, which did it in 13 days.

So here you go, the records so far:

Biggest opening day of all time

Biggest weekend gross of all time

Biggest holiday weekend gross of all time

Quickest film to gross $1 billion

Highest-grossing Star Wars film

But now we’re all wondering, will it be the No. 1 grossing movie of all time, beating Avatar, which sits at $2.78 billion globally? Well, currently The Force Awakens is at fifth place. But remember, that’s at only week two. So at this rate, after it opens in China, things should be looking pretty good.
