Alicia Silverstone Thinks Cher from “Clueless ”Would Be an Eco-Friendly Shopper Today: 'She'd Be Down'

The actress, 47, even listed potential stores the beloved character would shop if she were still hitting up the malls in 2024

Alicia Silverstone believes that despite her designer-loving ways, Clueless' Cher Horowitz would have evolved into an eco-friendly style icon.

While speaking about shopping and sustainability during The Good Festival's Sustainability Spotlights at Westfield Topanga in Canoga Park, California, on May 18, the actress revealed that she believes her famous character would have happily gotten with the times, making environmentally conscious decisions about her shopping habits — if she were still hitting up the malls in 2024.

Asked how she thinks Cher would balance being stylish and sustainable (remember that closet?!), Silverstone, 47, gave her take and even listed a few of the stores Cher would make her go-tos.

"I think Cher is a lot like having a kid in that she'd want the thing that she wants, but then she has such a big heart that she'd want to do the right thing," Silverstone said. "So she'd [probably shop at] The Real Real because she can get all her fabulous designers there and she'd look amazing but they'd be secondhand so she won't have to feel guilty about it."

"I also feel like she'd love this purse brand [called] Marcella ... Maybe she wouldn't go for Pact. I can see how she'd be like 'Those underwear are too boring,' but I [personally] don't care," she joked.

"I think she'd like Mate's T-shirts, but that would just be for a T-shirt and usually she wouldn't want to wear a T-shirt unless it's under a really cool blazer," she told attendees, before concluding, "pretty much, I think she'd be down."

Clueless, which premiered 29 years ago this July, follows teen Cher Horowitz as she navigates her family life, reputation at school and her own love life as well as the ups and downs of high school friendships.

The 1995 movie — written and directed by Amy Heckerling — has stood the test of time and remains a comfort rewatch for many.

Silverstone herself has leaned into the nostalgia of the classic in recent years. In 2023, the actress stepped back into Cher's iconic yellow plaid suit for a Rakuten Super Bowl ad.

When she made her TikTok debut back in 2021, Silverstone enlisted the help of her then-10-year-old son, Bear, who helped her reenact a scene from the famous flick.

Before that, Silverstone commemorated the 27th anniversary of the film's release in 2022 by sharing a video montage of her character on TikTok. "27 years ago, a bad b*tch was born 😉💁🏼‍♀️ Happy anniversary, Cher! 💛 #Clueless #AsIf #90s," Silverstone proudly wrote under the video.

A champion of clean living and eco-friendly shopping herself, Silverstone told the audience at The Good Festival that she has learned to lead by example rather than preach to others about planet-saving ways of shopping.

When it comes to pushing for the characters she plays to have the vegan lifestyle she has adopted, for instance, Silverstone admitted that she gets shy "that it will take people out of the character," but advocates for change where she can.

"What I do is when I read scripts is if I see something in there where, it'll sometimes say she's making bacon and eggs for breakfast, I'll say 'Hey, can we not make bacon and eggs for breakfast and try something else?' " she explained.

"I'll talk to the prop department and I say, not only do I not want any food that I'm making on camera to be animal, but also explain to them it'll be cheaper to buy vegan food for the extras because when there's a scene in a restaurant, that food sits around all day and get thrown out," she added. "So everywhere I can I ask to make changes."
