Alicia Keys Takes Swipe at No-Makeup Haters, Helps ‘Today’ Hosts Blot Theirs Off

Joining the Today show, Alicia Keys spoke about the movement she inadvertently started when she quit wearing makeup a few months ago. Keys caused an uproar among Internet trolls when she showed up fresh-faced at the MTV Video Music Awards, but she has also inspired more women to follow her example, many of whom have posted their pictures online with the hashtag #nomakeup.

Keys explained why she stopped wearing makeup in the first place, saying, “We put so many limitations on ourselves. We put limitations on each other. Society puts limitations on us, and in a lot of ways I’m sick of it. Over it.”

Keys also sat down with Tamron Hall, Billy Bush, and Al Roker later in the show, all of whom removed their makeup on the air. As Keys helped Hall remove hers, she told her that she looked beautiful without it.

Keys later explained to Hall what she feels the movement is really all about. “It’s a metaphor,” she said, “about really, 100%, finding out who you are and being who you are, and not covering up your truth, who you are inside, for any reason or anybody.”
