The Keys Soulcare entrepreneur opens up about her relationship in PEOPLE's latest digital cover

After 13 years of marriage, Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz are still in harmony.

In PEOPLE’s latest digital cover, the “Girl on Fire” singer opens up about the ways in which she and her producer husband have found a groove in which they can thrive — namely by prioritizing good communication.

“I spent a lot of relationships not really saying how I actually felt, and they fell apart,” says Keys. “If you can’t speak your truth, then you can’t be yourself. That’s a key! I don’t worry about speaking to him, even about the hard things, and I think he feels the same. I know that I can tell him what I really feel.”

Keys — who also prioritizes that self-care with Keys Soulcare, a beauty brand she launched in 2020 with dermatologist Dr. Renée Snyder — and Beatz tied the knot in 2010, and they share sons Egypt, 13, and Genesis, 9 (Beatz is also dad to children Kasseem Jr., Prince Nasir and Nicole from previous relationships).

Beatz, 45, has remained a pillar of support for Keys, 43, over the years, and proved himself a fiercely loyal partner just this week after he defended her performance during Usher’s Super Bowl LVIII halftime show as “amazing.”

“My husband — every second, it’s noise. But that’s him, and I love it,” says Keys. “He is the best DJ in the universe, and we walk down the street, and it’s a party. It’s amazing.”

Though the two share a tight bond, and have made it a point to emphasize the importance of communication in raising their sons, Keys says there’s a fun side to their relationship, too.

“We have a lot fun. We laugh a lot,” she says. “He’s really silly, I’m really silly.”

Together, they’ve also expanded their empire into art; their exhibition Giants opened at the Brooklyn Museum on Feb. 10 and will run through July 7. Their expansive collection includes works from Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gordon Parks, Kehinde Wiley and more.

“This collection has been something that’s been so personal and such a long time of really loving and creating deep relationships with the artists in our collection,” she says. “To be able to show it in one place at the Brooklyn Museum in the Great Hall, I can’t even tell you… We are going to be bawling, I can’t even believe it.”

Keys’ performance at Usher’s halftime show was just the latest in a long line of successes for the star; in addition to celebrating Keys Soulcare’s recent partnership with Amazon, she’ll also mark the Broadway opening of her musical Hell’s Kitchen in April.

“It’s something I’ve been working on for the past 13 years, so to see it come to fruition… It’s incredible,” she says. “It’s amazing.”
