Ali Wong Shares Why Her and Boyfriend Bill Hader's 'Selectively Private' Relationship Works

The 'Beef' star and the 'Barry' creator started dating again in April and have been putting on public displays of affection throughout awards season

Ali Wong and Bill Hader have been putting their relationship on display during awards season.

While their coupling may come as a surprise to some, “we’ve been together for a minute, so it’s like, I guess people didn’t know were together,” Wong, 41, told Access Hollywood ahead of Monday’s 2023 Emmy Awards.

The Beef star — who picked up the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series or television movie for her role in the Netflix series — has shared a kiss with Hader, 45, after winning at the Emmys, as well as the 2024 Golden Globes and the 2024 Critics Choice Awards. Wong said she and the Barry creator, who was also nominated at Monday's Emmys in the outstanding actor in a comedy series category, like to keep their relationship “very selectively private.”

The mom of daughters Nikki, 6, and Mari, 8, added that their relationship works because she and Hader, who shares three daughters with his ex-wife Maggie Carey, find themselves in similar places in life.

“It’s just also, like, we’re both, like, in our 40s and parents,” Wong told Access Hollywood.

PEOPLE confirmed in April that Hader and Wong rekindled their relationship after briefly dating in fall 2022. In April 2022, Wong announced her split from husband Justin Hakuta; she officially filed for divorce from the entrepreneur, 41, in December.

Wong and Hakuta’s relationship has remained amicable — she even thanked him after winning at the Golden Globes earlier this month.

"I really need to thank the father of my children and my best friend, Justin, for all of your love and support,” she said while accepting the best actress in a limited series, anthology series or a motion picture made for television honor for Beef. “It's because of you that I'm able to be a working mother."

Wong later told Entertainment Tonight that she likes “to keep it peaceful and grateful and amicable” when it comes to the men in her life.

At Monday’s Emmys, Wong shouted out her parents and daughters in her acceptance speech.

"To my beautiful daughters, you are my everything and thank you for inspiring me," she said. "This is for you."
