Ali Wong Revealed the Relatable Secret To Making Her Relationship Work With Bill Hader

The last two weeks have felt like Ali Wong and Bill Hader’s big relationship coming-out party during awards show season. While they aren’t interested in posing on the red carpet or doing interviews together, they certainly aren’t hiding the fact that they are dating. The 41-year-old comedian even coined a phrase for how they are navigating the Hollywood press scene.
Wong shared with Access Hollywood at Monday night’s Primetime Emmys that she and Hader have been together for a minute,” but she also understands that some fans were shocked they were even dating in the first place. She likes to call their approach to their relationship as “very selectively private.” They aren’t interested in putting their love on blast on the red carpet for all of the world to see, but once they are safely inside the theater for the Emmys or the Golden Globes or the Critics Choice Awards, they aren’t hiding their romance either (and they even pose for photos together).

The talented duo bonded over the fact that they are both in similar stages in their personal and professional lives. “We’re both, like, in our 40s and parents,” noted the Beef star in her Emmys interview. Wong is the mom to daughters, Mari, 8, and Nikki, 6, from her marriage to Justin Hakuta — their divorce is still being worked out. Hader has three daughters Hannah, 13, Harper, 10, and Hayley, 8, from his marriage to Maggie Carey. Wong and Hader dated briefly in the fall of 2022 and then rekindled their romance in spring 2023. Ever since then, it seems like they are firing on all cylinders.
Wong’s split from Hakuta has been on display this awards show season because the Netflix star made sure to thank her ex for making her career possible. “I really need to thank the father of my children and my best friend, Justin, for all of your love and support,” she said during her Golden Globes acceptance speech earlier this month. “It’s because of you that I’m able to be a working mother.”
Hader has been quieter about his relationship with Wong, but he mentioned his “girlfriend” in an April 2023 interview with Collider. My girlfriend and I were just figuring out that I haven’t had a vacation in 10 years,” he revealed. “I went with her to San Francisco, but that doesn’t really count. So, I’m going to have a vacation.” That “girlfriend” just so happened to be Wong, so he’s spilling the tea in his own private way — just the way the couple likes it.
