Alfred Molina and Jane Kaczmarek will star early next year in a revival of Eugene O'Neill's epic drama of a haunted family caught in the paralyzing grip of the past, Long Day's Journey Into Night.

Directed by Jeanie Hackett, the production will run Jan. 31-March 19 in the Gil Cates Theater at Los Angeles' Geffen Playhouse.

Set in 1912 in the Connecticut summer house of the Tyrone clan, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play is a semi-autobiographical depiction of O'Neill's own troubled family life.

Molina will play James Tyrone Sr., a vain former stage matinee idol whose penny-pinching is one of the causes at the root of the family's festering unhappiness. Kaczmarek will play his morphine-addicted wife Mary, considered one of the greatest female roles in the American theatrical canon.

Casting for the other key parts of the Tyrones' sons, James Jr. and Edmund, has not yet been announced.

Previously announced productions for the Geffen's 2016-17 season include Robert O'Hara's Barbecue, Donald Margulies' The Model Apartment, Matthew Lopez's The Legend of Georgia McBride, Nick Payne's Constellations and the world premiere of Alena Smith's Icebergs.

Long Day's Journey Into Night is currently playing on Broadway through June 26 in an acclaimed revival directed by Jonathan Kent, which just won a Tony Award for lead actress for Jessica Lange as Mary Tyrone. Lange stars in that production opposite Gabriel Byrne, Michael Shannon and John Gallagher Jr.
