Alex Trebek’s kids share favorite memories of ‘Jeopardy!’ host ahead of Father’s Day

Alex Trebek is beloved around the world as the longtime "Jeopardy!" host, but to Matthew, Emily and Nicky Trebek, he's just their loving dad.

Ahead of Father's Day Sunday, the three siblings opened up about their relationship with Trebek in an Insidewink article published by the host's wife, Jean, offering an inside look into Trebek's life off the small screen.

"It feels to me like our little family was meant to be…the stars all were aligned to bring together such unique personalities which deeply support and respect each other," Jean wrote. "What’s interesting for me to witness, is that they each have had their own unique experiences with Alex and that really reflects back different perspectives on the man I married."

During a recent dinner gathering, Jean said she asked the kids "some questions about their Dad" including: What’s your favorite childhood memory?

There was no need to cue the iconic "Jeopardy!" "Think!" song, because his children immediately knew their answers. (Although they weren't in the standard answer-and-question "Jeopardy!" format)

Matthew, Trebek's son with Jean, said he cherishes memories of his father attending his paintball tournaments. "Although it was a very unique sport, he still got very enthusiastic about watching and learning the game," he recalled.

Emily, Trebek's youngest child with Jean, said she shares her dad's "Type-A" personality.

"I think I got a lot of my organizational, financial and perfectionistic traits from him," she said. "He also has always been into construction so I think that rubbed off on me too."

Nicky, the daughter of Trebek’s first wife whom he later adopted, added that she think's her dad is "proud to see me working in an industry that makes me happy." Nicky followed in her father's footsteps and works at "Jeopardy!"

"He’s really good at his profession," Nicky said. "The best in the business. People don’t really understand what it takes to do what he does. He is meticulous and I feel very honored to have been able to watch him behind the scenes all of these years."

When it comes to their father's most admirable personality trait, Emily said it's his "determination."

Matthew said he admires his father's "persistence." The restaurateur added, "When it comes to solving challenges…Never give up!"

That's the same trait Trebek is using to battle stage 4 pancreatic cancer, a diagnosis he revealed on the "Jeopardy!" YouTube channel in March 2019.

"I plan to beat the low survival-rate statistics for this disease," he said in his video announcement. "Truth told, I have to! Because under the terms of my contract, I have to host 'Jeopardy!' for three more years!"

Nicky applauded her father's "generosity to everyone and his humility" during his cancer battle. "I personally experienced him writing hundreds of thousands of thank you notes while he battled for his life. It’s truly astounding. I honestly can’t even put it into words," she added.
