Three years after Alex Trebek’s death, the Jeopardy! host’s family is starting a new venture in his honor.

Alex’s wife Jean Trebek has teamed up with Stand Up To Cancer to launch The Alex Trebek Fund, which is dedicated to researching pancreatic cancer, the disease that took Alex’s life in 2020 at the age of 80. The fund has been launched with an initial pledge of $1 million and will continue to fundraise throughout November, which is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

To commemorate the launch of the fund, current Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings joined Jean and Alex’s daughter Emily in a video paying tribute to Trebek’s enormous legacy as a beloved game show host and explaining the purpose of the fund. “Alex knew that knowledge equaled power. He was a man that really loved to know things and stayed very curious,” Jean Trebek said in a statement. “Since Alex was all about the right answer, I think it’s very fitting that this fund is now established in his name. It’s a way for the community that loved him to put resources directly into the hands of scientists working tirelessly to fight a disease shrouded by many unknowns.”

Trebek began hosting Jeopardy! in 1984 and remained behind the podium for more than three decades, turning the brainy quiz show into a cultural phenomenon and winning seven Daytime Emmys for best game show host. He first announced his Stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis in March 2019, but continued to host Jeopardy! until the very end, with his final episodes airing after his death. Since then, Jennings and Mayim Bialik have teamed up to host the show on an alternating basis.
