Alex Lahey has made a new appearance on triple j’s “Like a Version” cover series, and this time, she’s offered an uplifting cover of Cass Elliot’s classic tune, “Make Your Own Kind of Music.” Watch a video of the performance below.

“This song goes out to anyone who feels like they can’t dress how they want to dress, or love who they want to love, or just feel like they can’t be themselves,” Lahey declared during a poignant, mid-song address to the camera. “You gotta make your own kind of music, and sing your own special song, because you’re special. And you’re special because you’re you.”

Speaking about the decision to cover Elliot’s 1969 version of the tune, Lahey explained that she was initially inspired by the song’s inclusion in the official trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. “It just kinda pops up in the zeitgeist, just kinda existing,” she told triple j in a behind-the-scenes video. “When it appeared in this trailer, I just knew that it was the song that we were supposed to do.”

Continuing, Lahey cited the song’s message of self-love and Elliot’s down-to-Earth vocal performance as additional factors contributing to her wanting to cover it. Describing it as a “really counter-cultural song,” she supposes that the original version was a “stick it to the man” sort of thing. “I love that,” she said. “That is so punk rock in its essence.”

Punk as it may be, though, Lahey suggests that it’s the simple sincerity of Elliot’s version that has made it resonate through the years. “I think the reason why her voice is so perfect is because there is a certain obtainability to it,” Lahey explained. “It’s not like she’s singing in crazy registers or doing wild vocal acrobatics or whatever. It really, like, sits in the heart, which sounds strange, but there is something about her register and the way that she sings that’s so from the heart, and so beautiful.”

As for her own version, Lahey hopes the performance — and the little pep talk within it — can provide a boost for folks who need it. “I thought it would be a really special moment,” she said. “[Maybe there’s] a message in it to people who need a pick-me-up on their Friday morning, extrapolating the themes of the song itself, which are: being yourself, being true to yourself, and not compromising your identity for anything else.”

Meanwhile, Lahey is still on the road, touring Europe in support of her new album from this past May, The Answer Is Always Yes. Check out her full list of dates below, and grab your tickets here.
