On her podcast Call Her Daddy, host Alex Cooper is always getting into the details about other people’s relationships. Fair is fair, and Cooper has shared quite a bit about her own relationship with her now-husband, Matt Kaplan. The couple first met in 2020, over Zoom as was the style at the time. They were engaged three years later, and they tied the knot in Mexico in 2024.

Here’s everything to know about Kaplan, much of it out of Cooper’s own mouth.

Who is Alex Cooper’s husband, Matt Kaplan?

The successful CEO attended Columbia University. He had two passions in school: football and film. While at Columbia, he was a quarterback on their team, the Columbia Lions. He said on The Backlot podcast that his time playing and studying movies were the “only two things I liked doing for fun.”

He took classes in writing and directing and claims he “wasn’t that good at it,” but decided he was good at “assessing material.”

Kaplan was right about that. He went on to work as an assistant at Lionsgate and then at Blumhouse. But his big break was at Awesomeness Films, where he produced To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. It became a hit franchise on Netflix, and he eventually served as president of the company. He now runs Ace Entertainment.

If that wasn’t enough, Kaplan and Cooper have launched their own media company called Trending, focused on Gen Z audiences. They’ve inked deals with influencers like Alix Earle and Madeline Argy.

How did Cooper and Kaplan get together?

In August 2020, Cooper introduced “Mr. hot Zoom Man” on her podcast and shared her experience of their first date after meeting through the conference app.

“I get into the car, we lock eyes,” Cooper told her podcast listeners. “You know those people you meet immediately that it’s just like you feel like you’ve known each other for so long? We immediately vibed, and it was just like we’re going to get along so well.”

Fans speculated on his identity, especially when she announced she officially had a boyfriend six months later. She didn’t confirm her boyfriend was Kaplan until April 2023.

When did they get engaged?

Kaplan proposed to Cooper in March 2023 with a 5-carat, vintage oval-cut diamond by jewelry designer Jenna Blake. Cooper thought she was hosting a photo shoot at her home. While she was out getting ready, Kaplan used the time to decorate the house and set up a scavenger hunt to lead her to her ring. She found him outside with their two dogs, who were in bowties for the occasion.

“He got down on one knee and said, ‘You’re my soulmate, the love of my life. You make me a better man. Please do me the honor of marrying me,’” she told W Magazine. “I like, blacked out. I think I said yes at first. It was very surreal.”

The podcast host has said she wasn’t sure she ever wanted to get married, and Kaplan had accepted that. But as their relationship progressed, she felt ready for a proposal.

“He was beaming, because he had accepted that maybe we wouldn’t get married,” she explained. “I really did not grow up ever envisioning a wedding. I don’t have a Pinterest board of flowers and dresses. I think we definitely want to get married next year.”

After the proposal, they met with friends and family to celebrate at the Four Seasons in Los Angeles.

“It was truly the most memorable, loving experience that I’ve ever, ever had in my life. And it was perfect, and I will remember it for the rest of my life,” she said.

What else has Cooper said about Kaplan?

As a man who works behind the scenes, Kaplan apparently likes to stay pretty private, despite having a wife who shares so much about her life. Cooper told W, “Matt is so private, but he also loves the Daddy Gang. Every week he’s like, ‘How’s the episode going? Do they like it?’”

She went on, “When I started this show, I was so open about everything, maybe at times to the detriment of my personal life. I would have something happen to me the night before, and I would go run into the studio and talk about it. I didn’t even let myself process things.”

But she also teased the idea he might make an appearance on her podcast.

“Never say never, because I never thought I would announce who he was or post a picture of us,” she said. “And now here I am.”

When did Cooper and Kaplan get married?

In February 2024, the couple had a “practice ceremony” that she shared shots from on Instagram.

“Practicing for the big day🥺❤️,” Cooper wrote in the caption. “We had a little pre-wedding celebration with Matt’s 100 yr old grandma last night. She sadly won’t be able to travel to our wedding so we wanted to make her feel special and a part of everything❤️ sobbing love you grandmommy. The daddy gang loves you too you legend (yes she’s wearing Chd sweats).”

They never shared a date for the “real” ceremony, but she did share details of how she wanted like to celebrate on a Call Her Daddy episode. She said, “I don’t want it to be somewhere people can publicly consume our wedding. I don’t need Uncle Marty on his retirement trip in the background snorkeling belly up, holding a fucking Piña colada in my shot.”

She went on, “It’s so important to me that Matt and I actually have this day to ourselves. I would rather have every fucking person at our wedding have the worst goddamn time, and Matt and I fucking thrive.”

The wedding weekend took place on April 4, 2024 in Riviera Maya, Mexico, according to Vogue.

“It was everything we wanted it to be,” Cooper told the magazine. “It was emotional, heartfelt, and we tailored it to exactly how we always envisioned it.”

“There were these huge antique wooden doors facing the courtyard, [so] I decided rather than walking by our guests down the aisle, the doors would open and I would walk towards everyone seated as they were all facing me,” she continued. “A runway if you will! It was the perfect moment because as soon as I came out, the only thing I saw was Matt. It was a very dramatic moment revealing my dress but also a very beautiful euphoric moment between the two of us.”

While the Call Her Daddy host is no stranger to letting her fans in on her personal life, she admitted that the real details of her relationship with Kaplan are typically kept private.

“Although my life is pretty public, the true intimate bond and connection Matt and I have we actually keep pretty private,” Cooper said.

When the couple read their vows, which they wrote, “it felt electric—as you will see in almost every photo, there were no dry eyes in sight. We will never forget that moment,” Cooper told Vogue.

Cooper’s brother, Grant, served as the officiant for the ceremony.

“He has been so instrumental throughout my life, and he and Matt have built such a great bond,” Cooper said. “My brother did such an incredible job speaking so beautifully about our relationship.”

Cooper also shared that she decided not to have her father walk her down the aisle, instead opting to walk alone.

“At the beginning of wedding planning, I really rejected the concept of being walked down by a man to be handed to another man,” she said. “Although to clarify I have such an incredible relationship with my father and both of my parents—it wasn’t about that. To me personally, I just never loved that tradition. It’s old and antiquated. My mom also walked herself down the aisle, so in a sense, I guess we are creating our own tradition for the women in our family.”

That’s not the only wedding tradition that Cooper and Kaplan decided not to partake in.

“Since Matt and I both have two left feet, we opted out of a first dance and once again did things our way…we instead had a first shot with all of our guests,” she revealed

The couple recruited their dogs, Henry and Bruce, as ring bearers.

“Some may recognize them as goldendoodles but we see them as our children,” Cooper joked. “They were the ring bearers. They each had one of our rings around their collar and when my brother asked for the rings, they had their own moment entering from the double doors and came running down the aisle. It was perfection.”

All in all, it was the fairytale wedding of her dreams.

“Matt and I were both so intentional about making the weekend about being present with each other and our friends and family, and that’s exactly what we did. There’s no detail or moment I won’t remember—and I will cherish this celebration of our love forever,” she finished.

Who else have Kaplan and Cooper been romantically linked to?

Kaplan was married to Claire Holt, an Australian actress best known for her role in The Originals, though they divorced in 2016 after less than a year of marriage. He also dated Ashley Olsen for three years. They split in 2004.
