Alert: 'Big Little Lies' May Not be Over, According to Laura Dern

Fans of Big Little Lies were shocked when they saw how the show’s second season ended — and they were probably pretty sad too, because the season finale sure felt like a series finale. But if recent statements from one of the show’s stars, Laura Dern, are any indication, the saga may continue to unfold, and we might get a third season of Big Little Lies.

The most recent installment of the novel-turned-HBO-hit featured (spoiler alert!) the Monterey five (which is composed of Dern’s Renata, Nicole Kidman’s Celeste, Reese Witherspoon’s Madeline, Shailene Woodley’s Jane and Zoë Kravitz’s Bonnie) turning themselves in for the crime they committed at the end of the show’s first season. It felt like a full-circle moment, and very much like an ending — which, according to Dern’s comments, is what it was intended to be.

But according to Dern, Kidman — who not only stars in but also produces the show — wants more. Back in July, Kidman told E! she’d only continue the story if everyone involved came back, and at least one actor seems to be very much on board.

She’s a producer, so she would know more than me,” Dern told E! News of Kidman. “But we could never have more fun. We are truly a family, all my buddies that I work with are like aunts to [my daughter] Jaya now. There’s no happier place to work on earth and I could not love a character more.”

It’s worth noting that the show’s second season didn’t even seem like a given at one point. Fans of the Big Little Lies novel (which was written by Liane Moriarty) know that the first season covered most of the novel’s ground, while the second season expanded upon Moriarty’s plot (and even introduced a new character played by Meryl Streep). So while the second season’s finale did offer a sense of finality, that’s not exactly proof that we should count out the show’s return. Time will tell if it’ll actually happen, but there at least seems to be some serious interest — the door isn’t closed yet!
