Alec Baldwin reacts to Sean Spicer's Emmys appearance
Sean Spicer made a polarizing appearance during Sunday’s Emmy Awards, but at least one winner cut him some slack.
Spicer rolled out onto the stage riding a motorized podium — as Melissa McCarthy has done on Saturday Night Live when playing the character — to riff on his post-inauguration press conference where he berated the media for accurately reporting Donald Trump’s inaugural crowd size.
Many celebs in the audience, including McCarthy, were visibly shocked, but when asked about the feeling in the room during Spicer’s appearance, Emmy winner Alec Baldwin said backstage that he actually had something in common with the former White House staffer.
“People in the business and the average person is very grateful for him to have a sense of humor and participate,” Baldwin said after his win for supporting actor in a comedy. “Spicer obviously was compelled to do certain things that we might not have respected, we might not have admired, we might have been super critical of in order to do his job, but I’ve done some jobs that are things that you shouldn’t admire or respect me for either. He and I have that in common.”
As for his future on SNL, Baldwin was asked how many more episodes he’d have to do before Trump is out of office. “The answer is between 3 and 103,” he said. “I’m not quite sure but I know that we’ll be back. I’m going to be available to do some of those shows this year so we look forward to picking up where we left off.”
While Baldwin doesn’t seem to have any fans in the White House, he recognized portraying the president has given some hope to people across the country. “I do think that people are overwhelmed,” Baldwin said. “We’re in a situation now where a critical mass of people still don’t accept where we are. They find it unthinkable. Every day that feeling gets reinforced by the thoughts, words, and deeds of this person. I find myself as a conduit for them; they’re very frustrated, they’re suffering a great deal, they love their country like anybody, I would imagine, anywhere around the world, and they’re confused and in pain and they walk up to me and slap me on the back all day and say thank you for helping us to, in some small way, manage that pain.”
