Alec Baldwin might be trying to move forward from the fatal shooting on the set of Rust in 2021, but prosecutors in New Mexico aren’t done with the case. Last Friday, the 65-year-old actor was charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

This is the second indictment for Baldwin after he was initially charged in January 2023, only to have the charges dropped three months later. The prosecutors blamed the lack of time in preparing for the case, noting, “New facts were revealed that demand further investigation and forensic analysis in the case against Alexander “Alec” Rae Baldwin, III. Consequently, we cannot proceed under the current time constraints and on the facts and evidence turned over by law enforcement in its existing form.” Unfortunately for the 30 Rock star, the grand jury decided to revisit those charges and he finds himself back to square one.

A source close to Baldwin shared with People that it’s a “very stressful” time for him and wife Hilaria Baldwin. “They had a great Christmas and New Year. Hilaria also just turned 40. This is not how they wanted to start the new year,” the insider claimed. “It’s stressful for Hilaria. It’s frustrating for them both that Alec is being recharged.” The couple “knew there was a possibility there would be a new indictment,” but they were hoping the grand jury would seek a different outcome. “The back and forth is hard. It’s very stressful,” they added.

The second indictment comes on the heels of Baldwin’s unusual appearance in a real estate video to offload his almost $19 million Amagansett, New York home. The property has been on and off the market since 2022 with its original price of $29 million — and he’s had no luck with subsequent price cuts. He’s been downsizing his real estate portfolio ever since his legal issues arose, having sold an upstate New York residence. He currently retains his $16 million Manhattan apartment and a $1.75 million Vermont farm.

However, this latest legal entanglement, along with pending civil cases, mean a long (and expensive) road ahead. Baldwin is expected to fight the charges as his lawyers, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro of Quinn Emanuel, responded to People about last week’s indictments, “We look forward to our day in court.”
