'Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck' director says album of unreleased songs will be released in summer

Kurt Cobain’s legacy as a musical giant only expands and becomes deeper in the 20 years after his death. On Monday, HBO will air the Brett Morgen-directed documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, which is already in theaters to heaps of praise. Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, gave Morgen access to the Cobain family’s personal belongings, footage, artwork, journals, and lots, lots more.

Unheard Cobain songs and recordings were in the mix, too, which will find its way to the public—soon— Morgen told Beford + Bowery. “We’re going to be putting out an amazing album this summer that I think will answer that question,” he said, and “will feel like you’re kind of hanging out with Kurt Cobain on a hot summer day in Olympia, Washington as he fiddles about. It’s going to really surprise people.” To be clear: This isn’t a lost, uncovered fourth studio album: It’s solely Cobain. Nevertheless, more of him in 2015 didn’t ever seem likely, making the prospect all the more thrilling.
