Garbage influenced me to buy the sofa of my dreams.
I live in an old apartment building in brownstone Brooklyn, and most of my neighbors have significantly bigger homes (read: bank accounts) than me. My couch is the 86-inch Kova Sofa, which has hundreds of five-star ratings from fellow customers, in the lush rust velvet fabric pictured above. It’s among Albany Park’s cushier models, which is exactly what I was looking for after 12 years with a stiff Ikea loveseat (I’m sure you know the one). It’s also a sectional, so I have the potential to make it bigger in the future.
I sprung for the Kova bundle with a storage ottoman, since I initially had my heart set on a chaise sofa to stretch out on but don’t currently have the living room space for the internet-famous Albany Park Kova Pit. You can get an ottoman without storage for a bit less, but trust me, the option to hide extra blankets and pillows in plain sight is totally worth it.

Even with that addition, my Albany Park sofa still fell into my pricing sweet spot. At major online retailers, I saw plenty of couches I could afford, but they looked cheap and uncomfortable, while the likes of West Elm and Lovesac were more than I wanted to spend. Once I got each piece out of the box, the Kova sectional couch came together in just a few minutes, and it’s been easy to clean up dust and crumbs with the power brush attachment on my cordless vacuum. The couch’s design isn’t conducive to side tables or a coffee table, so I’m using a $30 serving tray from Amazon to corral remotes, my morning coffee, and anything else I need in reach. Honestly, a couch tray is way more convenient than that extra furniture could ever be.
Five months later, my couch cushions, which the brand says are stuffed with “a cloud-soft, hypoallergenic microfiber blend,” still feel brand new; they just need some regular fluffing to keep them that way. Plus, the couch is so deep, I practically disappear into it: I’m 5’4”, and when I kick my feet up on the ottoman, there’s still plenty of room for another person or two to sit on it.
