Alanis Morissette and her husband, Mario "Souleye" Treadway, have been together for nearly 15 years. After meeting in 2009, the pair tied the knot the following year.

Prior to saying "I do," the “Ironic” singer had several high-profile relationships, including a three-year engagement to Ryan Reynolds before the duo split in 2007. She was also previously linked to Full House star, Dave Coulier.

During an interview with Oprah for “Super Soul Sunday” in 2014, she spoke about her past romances and how Souleye was different. "I would date people, and there would be something about me that would hit a brick wall with whomever I was sitting across from," she explained. "And with Souleye, when I first met him, I could see that there was this limitlessness to where we could go."

Continuing, Morissette referred to their marriage as “really interesting and really challenging and really beautiful.”

Six months after they wed, Morissette and Souleye welcomed their first child together, son Ever Imre. In 2016, their second child, daughter Onyx Solace, was born followed by their son, Winter Mercy, in 2019. Speaking to Self that same year, she praised him as a parent and a partner, saying, “He's an incredibly modern man, so he has never had an issue with being married to an alpha woman, God bless him.”

She added, “He's with the kids right now, that's a huge provision. Especially around pregnancy, if I need something at any given time, if at 4 p.m. I need probiotics he's like ‘I'll be right back.’ So that's amazing.”

In May 2023, Souleye celebrated their upcoming anniversary with a sweet photo of the two on Instagram with the caption, “Forever Intertwined. 10-day countdown. 13 years”

Born in Boston as Mario John Treadway, Souleye is an accomplished musician himself. He’s a hip-hop artist, rapper, and songwriter who first began rapping in high school. After dropping out of college in 2001, he began performing with a group of fellow artists known as Transcendental Alliance. In 2003, he released his first album.

“If I didn’t follow this passion and be creative, then what am I here for?” he said on his website. “This is my mission.”

His 12th studio album, Disguised As Tomorrow, was released in March 2023.

Morissette is a big believer in meditation, something she and her husband have in common. In fact, the pair first met in 2009 while attending a meditation retreat in California.

“He came with a mutual friend of ours, and when he walked in I just thought ‘Wow!’ ” she told Live Happy of their initial meeting. She went on to explain that she was drawn to him because of who he was. “He was oriented toward really doing the brave inner work, the kind of inner work that isn’t always comfortable.”

Meditation is still an important part of their lives, too. They even had a dedicated room for meditating in their house.

On May 22, 2010, the couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at their Los Angeles home, PEOPLE confirmed at the time.

“Love kicks in for real when things are hard,” she told Piers Morgan during an interview on CNN. She went on to explain how she knew that Souleye was the right one for her, saying, “[It was our] values being the same. So, for me, things like partnership, family, commitment, and seeing marriage as a hotbed for growth and healing.”

They have three children

In a pleasant surprise, Morissette and Souleye became parents six months after getting married. They welcomed their son, Ever Imre Morissette-Treadway, on Dec. 25, 2010. Like their wedding, this milestone was also held at home.

The couple had a second home birth in June 2016 when their daughter, Onyx Solace Morissette-Treadway, was born. According to Morissette, it was an extremely quick delivery — under an hour — and Onyx arrived before their midwife.

“Souleye caught Onyx,” she told PEOPLE of the memorable birth. “He was coaching me and I was coaching him.”

On Aug. 8, 2019, they welcomed their third child, son Winter Mercy Morissette-Treadway. A few days later, Souleye announced the news with a black-and-white photo of their new baby on Instagram with the caption, “@alanis You will forever be my heroine. thank you for your warrior strength and ability to so deeply love.”

They "unschool" their kids

Morissette has been extremely open about all aspects of motherhood — from struggling to get pregnant to crippling post-partum depression. Similarly, she’s been vocal about how she and Souleye practice "unschooling" when it comes to their three kids.

“Unschooling, for me, is child-led education,” she shared in an interview with Health Magazine. “I'm constantly watching their eyes and what they're pulled toward, and then we do the deep dive. My husband and I create pods all over the house — here's where the spelling area is, and here's where the fake animals are. There's probably a better definition of unschooling, but there's no rigidity to it.”

In another interview on Katie Lowes’ podcast, Katie’s Crib, she further elaborated. “I understand and respect conventional schooling, to some degree. I think because of my direct experience with ongoing education, it has me see unschooling as certainly daunting but in a really cool way."

She also explained that it works well for them because of her own busy schedule. “I can be working at home when I want to and they can come on tour with me, and we're an attachment village."

As a pair of married musicians, it’s no surprise that Morissette and Souleye have collaborated together musically.

Morissette worked alongside her husband multiple times — he’s gone on tour with her and she co-wrote several of the songs on his 2013 album, Iron Horse Running. In 2017, they collaborated on a song called “Soul Angel” – Morissette also appears in the music video.

“It was an honor to work with my wife on this song,” Souleye told Fuse (via ET Canada). Not only does she inspire me as an artist, but she ceaselessly fluffs my ego. She is also hilarious so we were having a blast together.”

He was the best kiss of her life

In an interview with The Guardian, Morissette was asked what the best kiss of her life was. She responded, saying, “My first with my husband. We went on a hike together in Los Angeles and ran to the top of a mountain. We were sweaty and exhausted and we smooched.”

At the Elle USA Women In Concert Celebration in 2020, she spoke about her happy marriage. “We’re helping each other out,” she said. “Relationships go from infatuation to power struggle and then most people break up. I think it’s getting juicy as we’re going on the third phase of helping each other heal and grow.”

She went on to reveal that “flirting” is the secret to their long-lasting love. “Flirting is nice … dates, gifts and compliments. Anytime he says anything about me emotionally, like ‘Wow, you’re really nurturing’ or ‘really patient,’ that’s like full-blown sexy time for me.”
