Alabama DE Will Anderson says Texans coach DeMeco Ryans is ‘a great guy’

The Houston Texans may be going quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, but that hardly means they are skimping on the rest of the process.

While the Texans did not have nearly the representation at the Alabama pro day March 23 as the Carolina Panthers did, they have been entertaining some of the Crimson Tide’s top prospects. Defensive end Will Anderson, who was projected as high as No. 1 overall until the Panthers traded for the top pick with the Chicago Bears, says he met with the Texans and no other NFL teams to this point.

“DeMeco Ryans is a great guy, good coaching staff over there,” Anderson said via video from Brett Greenberg from WKRG-TV. “Was able to speak with Christian Harris about the organization, too.”

Along with Harris, who the Texans selected as their third-round linebacker last season, Houston also took receiver John Metchie in Round 2 in 2022. The Texans have key former Alabama players on their roster to provide insight for any departing Crimson Tide players possibly headed to Clutch City.

In most mock drafts, Anderson is no longer considered a top-2 pick due to the run on quarterbacks, but is nevertheless too talented to be available when Houston picks again at No. 12 overall. The Texans carrying out their due diligence with the process gives them an opportunity to roundly evaluate Anderson should the chance arise to take the dominant edge defender.
