Al Roker and Wife Deborah Roberts Share ‘Gratitude’ After Family Emergency

Al Roker and Deborah Roberts thanked friends and fans for their support as they dealt with a health emergency involving their beloved dog Pepper.
Roker shared an update on Instagram on Sunday, May 5, that included photos of himself and Roberts with Pepper at an animal care center. The Today anchor said, "Our little girl, Pepper had emergency surgery but is on the mend. She’s getting great care and is coming home tomorrow. Woof."
He added sweetly, "You can sleep on our bed as much as you want."
In the photos, Roberts and Roker looked like they tried their best to maintain a positive outlook, with the former smiling at the camera as she held a tired-looking Pepper wearing a cone around her head. In another snap, as Roker held the dog on his lap, an IV port could be seen in Pepper's arm.
Roberts also posted about the health scare, starting her note by saying, "Gratitude. My heart is bursting with it today. Our littlest girl, Pepper, gave us quite a scare."
She referenced Pepper's surgery and said, "Thankfully, our strong girl is recovering." Roberts concluded by thanking everyone for their well wishes, writing, "We are grateful for any and all prayers for our sweet doggie who has stolen our hearts for 12 years now."
Roker adopted Pepper in 2012 from a Pennsylvania rescue, and since then, she's become a core member of the family. Although, Roker recently joked that Pepper isn't quite sure about his granddaughter Sky, who was born last summer to his daughter Courtney Roker Laga and her husband.
Pepper's health issues come about a year and a half since Roker went through his own health scare after suffering a pulmonary embolism, although he has been doing very well lately.
