Al Roker Says He's 'Very Excited' for His First Christmas as a Grandparent (Exclusive)

Rocker spoke to PEOPLE at the Root 100 Gala in New York City on Tuesday

Al Roker is looking forward to his first Christmas as a grandparent.

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the Root 100 Gala in New York City on Tuesday, Roker and his wife Deborah Roberts opened up about their festive plans with granddaughter, Sky Clara Laga, 6 months, and her mom and dad Courtney Roker and Wesley Laga.

“You know, there's a new grandbaby. So that's kind of exciting," Roker, 69, tells PEOPLE at The Apollo Theater. "It's gonna be a different kind of Christmas. So, very excited.”

“I think for us it's really just family," Deborah adds of the family’s Christmas plans. "It's really all about family and our family is so spread out that we don't have to gather as much as we'd like to during the year. So this year it really is just about tight-knit.”

The Today weatherman shares Courtney, 36, with his first wife, Alice Bell. He also shares daughter Leila, 25, and son Nicholas Albert, 21, with Deborah, 63.

In November, the Today star enjoyed his first Thanksgiving with Sky and shared a family snap on Instagram writing “My little Sky’s first @macys #thanksgivingdayparade.”

Roker opened up about Sky’s birth during an emotional moment on Today one week after her birth.

"It is magical, it really is," he said. "The thing is, everyone tells you it’s going to be 'this thing' and you don’t know; it’s like when they tell you about having your first child. And then to hold this little girl, knowing almost 35 years ago I held her mom? And here she is, 5 lbs., 15 oz. 19 inches long, and she’s just perfect."

Roker's holiday celebrations will be particularly meaningful this year after he spent the previous festive season recovering from health issues.

The weather anchor celebrated by posting a sweet image of his family sitting table-side wearing green Peanuts pajamas alongside a healthy breakfast.

"From our family to yours," Roker wrote, adding the hashtag "#merrychristmas."
