There are contingencies, Michaels conceded: "If [Travis] Kelce scores six touchdowns, who the hell knows what we’re going to do"

Thursday Night Football host Al Michaels said the broadcast plans to keep their cool if Taylor Swift is in the crowd cheering on Travis Kelce at the Kansas City Chiefs game tonight.

With Swift, 33, expected to attend Thursday night's matchup between the Chiefs and Denver Broncos, Michaels told Sports Illustrated, “What we’re gonna do tonight, everything in moderation."

That's the key word for tonight's coverage plans, he says, should Swift be in attendance. "Moderation. That's our word. Everything in moderation. What do you do at a certain point? 'There she is.' O.K. Got it," Michaels told SI.

Amazon Prime Video's broadcast crew held a meeting Thursday morning, Michaels told SI, where they determined, "You can’t make a sideshow the show," in regards to Swift and her rumored relationship with tight end Kelce.

"The vast majority of the audience are tuning in to watch a football game. There are people, I don’t know how many, it could be a sizable number, but it’s certainly not a majority, that if you trained the camera on her all night long, they’d be satisfied with that. This is not what we’re doing to do."

Instead, the Thursday Night Football broadcaster said Swifties "might" see an "appropriate shot or a couple" of glimpses at Swift, unless the situations call for more. "If Kelce scores six touchdowns, who the hell knows what we’re going to do," Michaels told SI.

He added, "But for the most part, just in moderation. The game is still the important element here, by far. That’s our thought. After that, you sort of make it, one of my favorite words, farcical.”

Following the NFL's coverage of Swift and friends at MetLife Stadium on Oct. 1, even Kelce, 34, said the league was "overdoing it a little bit" with the attention on him and Swift during an episode of his podcast New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce Presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end admitted, "I think it’s fun when they show who was at the game. I think it brings a little bit more to the atmosphere, brings a little bit more to what you’re watching." Kelce added, "They’re overdoing it a little bit for sure, especially my situation. [But] I think they’re just trying to have fun with it."

NFL fans specifically called out the league for their social media content around the singer, including changing their Instagram bio to "The @Chiefs are now 2-0 with @TaylorSwift13 in attendance" and briefly putting photos of Swift as their TikTok header.

In a statement to PEOPLE, the NFL defended their spotlight on Swift and said the social media changes are a normal part of their strategy.

"We frequently change our bios and profile imagery based on what’s happening in and around our games, as well as culturally," the NFL tells PEOPLE. "The Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce news has been a pop cultural moment we’ve leaned into in real time, as it’s an intersection of sport and entertainment, and we’ve seen an incredible amount of positivity around the sport."

"The vast majority of our content has remained focused on the game, our players and variety of other initiatives, including our Toy Story Funday Football alt-cast, the international games and more," they concluded.
