The Cincinnati Bengals are the last winless team in the NFL this season, and while they’re coming off their bye, they’ll be looking for their first win of the season this Sunday against the 6-2 Baltimore Ravens.
They will be getting a boost, however, in the form of the return of their best receiver.
Zac Taylor: A.J. Green will play
On Wednesday, rookie head coach Zac Taylor told media that A.J. Green will play on Sunday.
Green hasn’t yet played this season due to torn ankle ligaments suffered on the first day of training camp.
A seven-time Pro Bowler, Green will be playing with a new quarterback: Taylor benched veteran Andy Dalton two weeks ago for rookie Ryan Finley in the Bengals’ last game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Oddly, not long after Taylor told media he expected Green will play this week, the Bengals went out to practice and...Green wasn’t there.
Green told Paul Dehner of The Athletic last week that he would be ready to play against the Ravens, and wanted to remain with Cincinnati long term.
However, Green is in the final season of a four-year extension he signed in 2015, and does not want to be hit with the franchise tag; he’d rather the two sides agree to a multi-year deal.
But Green has missed eight games this season, missed seven last year and six in 2016, meaning he’s been unavailable for 21 of the Bengals’ last 56 regular-season games. When healthy he’s one of the best receivers in the league, but his recent injury history will likely cost him at the bargaining table.
