Airbnb host explains why he gives his guests as few checkout instructions as possible: ‘You’re not a housekeeper’
An Airbnb host is drawing praise after sharing his extremely simple list of rules.
John-Michael Thomas (@jamikeymike) posted the explanation on TikTok, where it has now drawn hundreds of thousands of views. His “easy” list of checkout instructions features just one step: close the door before you leave.

“Yep, that’s it, that’s all you need to do,” he said of the rule. “Close the door. Try to remember to lock it.”
The video came in response to a comment by another TikToker, who complained about the “horrible” cleaning fees and intricate checkout rules they’ve faced while using Airbnb.
In recent months, Airbnb customers have flooded TikTok with similar complaints. Earlier this year, a TikToker named Amanda (@amanda_wanders) claimed she got a negative review from her host because she requested extra toilet paper.
More recently, a user named Jet (@thefamousjet) posted a video mocking hosts’ convoluted rule lists. The video was a parody, but it instantly sparked thousands of complaints form Airbnb guests, many saying Jet wasn’t exaggerating.
“Fr we be paying $500-$600 to house sit someone’s apartment for 2 nights,” one commenter wrote.
“At this point we all should just go back to staying at hotels,” another added.
Thomas’s video, meanwhile, drew praise for the same reason Jet’s video sparked so much anger. At the end of his clip, he directly called out hosts who make things difficult for their guests.
“You’re on vacation,” he said. “You’re not a housekeeper. The hosts who do this chore stuff drive me insane.”

Airbnb’s website features a guide for hosts to use when crafting their check-in and checkout procedures. Above all, the service suggests that hosts be extremely clear when setting cleaning rules, checkout times and instructions for locking up.
“For some hosts, checkout simply means asking guests to close the door behind them and enjoy their journey home. Other hosts leave detailed instructions for tidying up. Whatever your hosting style, making sure your expectations for guest checkout are clearly communicated is the key to ending their stay on a positive note,” the post reads in part.
Still, many commenters on Thomas’s video agreed with his sentiment — wondering why guests should be asked to clean at all.
“Imagine going to a hotel, and then requiring you clean the room like a professional before you leave,” one user wrote.
“I have never been able to understand the $150+ cleaning fee!” another agreed. “Why do I have to clean before I leave if I’m paying to have it cleaned?!?”
According to the vacation rental software company iGMS, the average Airbnb cleaning fee is approximately $65 per booking. However, for larger properties and hosts who hire outside cleaning help, the average cost is $105.
