“We’re thrilled to have the incandescently talented Aidy Bryant joining us to host the 39th annual Spirit Awards,” Film Independent president Josh Welsh said. “Through her humor, skill, and seemingly endless supply of energy she has been entertaining audiences for years, and we can’t wait to see what she has in store for us as we celebrate independent artists on February 25.”

Bryant appeared on “SNL” from 2012 to 2022, where she was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards. She was later nominated for her third Emmy with Hulu series “Shrill,” which she starred in, co-created, and served as showrunner on. Bryant currently has an overall deal with Universal Television and is in development on multiple projects, including Ari Aster-produced series “Lonely Hearts Club” for Peacock.

Past Spirit Awards hosts have included Hasan Minhaj, Megan Mullaly and Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, Kate McKinnon, and Sarah Silverman.

The official nominations for the 2024 ceremony will be announced December 5. Films such as “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Poor Things,” “Passages,” and “Past Lives,” which recently won big at the 2023 Gotham Awards, are poised to be included on the nominations list.

The Spirit Awards ceremony switched to gender-neutral acting categories in 2023, and also increased the budget for eligible films, as the Gotham Awards similarly did.

The Spirit Awards is the nonprofit Film Independent’s primary fundraiser for its year-round slate of programs. The 2024 ceremony marks the second collaboration with Emmy Award-winning producer Eddie Delbridge of Live Digital Entertainment, with Shawn Davis executive producing for the 22nd time.

The annual awards ceremony is a precursor to Oscars recognition, with 2023 Spirit Award nominee “Everything Everywhere All at Once” going on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
