AI-Generated Voices of John Legend, Demi Lovato and Charlie Puth Are Coming to YouTube

Would you like a song from John Legend about your morning walk? Or a ditty from Demi Lovato about dinner last night? Or a ballad about a sunset from T-Pain? YouTube is releasing a tool that will make those a reality.

Called Dream Tracks, the AI tool will let users input a brief prompt and select a participating artist. The AI will then create track of up to 30 seconds that users can include in a YouTube Shorts video. The tool will initially be available to a select group of creators, with the current roster of participating artists including Alec Benjamin, Charlie Puth, Charli XCX, Demi Lovato, John Legend, Papoose, Sia, T-Pain, and Troye Sivan.

YouTube also released a set of statements from the participating musicians, with some strongly enthused by the tech, and others more cautiously optimistic.

“When I was first approached by YouTube I was cautious and still am, AI is going to transform the world and the music industry in ways we do not yet fully understand,” Charli XCX said. “This experiment will offer a small insight into the creative opportunities that could be possible and I’m interested to see what comes out of it.”

“Being a part of YouTube’s Dream Track experiment is an opportunity to help shape possibilities for the future,” added John Legend. “As an artist, I am happy to have a seat at the table and I look forward to seeing what the creators dream up during this period.”

The new tool came just a day after YouTube announced new rules and guardrails for AI technology on its platform. One of the rules is of particular relevance given the Dream Tracks announcement: Music labels representing artists that participate in YouTube’s AI incubator will have the right to remove any video featuring an AI-generated sound-alike of that artist.

Dream Tracks joins a growing list of AI tools being released by the Google-owned video giant. Perhaps the most notable of those other tools is Dream Screen, which will let users enter a prompt and get an AI-generated video to use as a green screen for their Shorts videos.
