Ahoy! Hugh Jackman Shaves Head for 'Pan'

It’s “hair today, gone tomorrow” for Hugh Jackman, who — mere days after sporting a radiant mane as host of the Tony Awards show — just shaved his head for his role in a new movie.

"Blackbeard is born," is how he describes a photo he posted on Instagram page. The X-Men star will be playing the villainous pirate in Pan, a prequel of sorts to J.M. Barrie’s classic children’s tale Peter Pan.

In addition to his signature Wolverine ‘do, Jackman has worn a wide assortment of hairstyles in his on-screen roles over the past decade: From his flowing locks in Van Helsing  (2004) to his shaved-prisoner cut in Les Miserables (2012). He also went bald for a number of scenes in Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain (2006), in which he also wears the shaggy locks of a Spanish conquistador.

Directed by Joe Wright, Pan reunites Jackman with his Miz costar Amanda Seyfried, The movie also features Rooney Mara, taking on the role of Tiger Lily, and Garrett Hedlund, stepping into the boots (and perhaps donning a prosthetic) as Blackbeard’s young colleague, James Hook. The story follows an orphan (Levi Miller) who’s spirited away to the magical realm of Neverland, where he embraces his destiny as the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up.

Pan will fly into theaters on July 17, 2015.
