It took less than a minute to decide on his bride but more than a decade to actually get hitched. And in a new interview, Dwayne Johnson admits “some hesitancy” on his part is behind that 12-year delay in marrying longtime love Lauren Hashian. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, “The Rock” — as he is affectionately known to fans — opened up about the real reason he kept dragging his feet.

Of course, Johnson did eventually tie the knot with Hashian. The two wed in an intimate ceremony in Hawaii this August. It was a special day for the couple, who share daughters Jasmine, 3, and Tiana Gia, 1. But inquiring minds need to know: Why did it take so long to make it official, in the marital sense? According to Johnson, he felt like he needed the extra time to fully heal after his 2008 divorce from first wife Dany Garcia. “My divorce did a number on me,” he confessed to WSJ. “I wasn’t fearful of getting married again, there was just some hesitancy. But Lauren was incredibly patient: ‘I love you, you love me, we have this amazing life together — no presh.'”

Interestingly, Johnson knew almost immediately he wanted to marry Hashian when they met in 2006 on the set of his movie The Game Plan. He recounted, “Within 30 seconds, I thought, ‘Wow, this girl’s stunning.”

Back then, though, the timing couldn’t have been more off. Yet, these things have a way of working out. “At the time, I was going through my breakup with Dany and [Lauren] was just coming off a big breakup too,” said Johnson, adding, “Ironically, when you’re not looking for something, the power of the universe kind of takes over.”

Hey, what’s that expression? Ah, yes — “Life is a journey, not a destination.” Johnson and Hashian may have taken the long road, but they still ended up where they were supposed to end up. And possibly because they took their sweet time, they managed to pull off a top-secret wedding. “There was no press, no paparazzi. No one knew,” Johnson told WSJ. “I was shocked but so grateful. My life is so loud and noisy; the fact that it was quiet was a big win.”
