‘AGT’ rocker disappoints judges with unexpected ‘80s cover

The live quarter finals for season 16 of America’s Got Talent continued Tuesday, and we finally found out which of the five wild card contestants had been voted through to this round: rock-chick powerhouse Storm Large.

Performing a slick and loungey rendition of A-ha’s “Take on Me,” the now 52-year-old didn’t have any trouble achieving the difficult vocal ranges required for her arrangement of the song, but that wasn’t enough to win over the judges.

“First of all, I really, really like you. And I admire you, and you're gutsy,” Simon Cowell said. “There was a rawness about you on this first audition which somehow has got lost. I don't know what happened -- you know, even your styling. Everything was just too soft tonight, in my opinion.”

STORM LARGE: (Singing) Take on me, Take me on.

- The America's Got Talent live quarterfinals continued on Tuesday, where it was announced that singer Storm Large had been voted in from the wild card competition show, which had been streaming on Peacock. After wowing the judges during her first audition with a rocked out take on I've Got You Under My Skin, this time, she attempted a reworked version of the 80s classic Take On Me by A-ha, but it made the judges go, oh, no.

SOFIA VERGARA: Your first song was so-- made your voice so different than everybody. Sounds so different that I have to say, I'm sure, I mean, people are going to love you, but for me, this was not better than the first audition song.

- Meanwhile, Simon Cowell who has been a big fan of Storm's and her, quote, amazing personality, was clearly disappointed in her latest performance.

SIMON COWELL: There was a rawness about you on this first audition which, somehow, has got lost. I don't know what happened. You know, it's-- you know, even your styling, everything was just too soft tonight, in my opinion.

- But viewers on Twitter didn't see things the same with comments like, I disagree with the judges there. I believe Storm Large smashed that, and, the judges are ridiculous. Storm Large was sensational. Please vote her in. And as Howie Mandel pointed out after agreeing that it wasn't the right song choice, it'll be up to the viewers to decide if she stays or, as Storm sang herself, if she'll be gone in a day.

STORM LARGE: (singing) I'll be gone in a day.
