“AGT: Fantasy League” continued on January 29 with the first set of second round performances in “Semi-Finals 1.” The new spin-off series marks the return of former judge Mel B as she joins Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel in a head-to-head competition to mentor an all star ‘AGT’ act through the season to victory. Terry Crews is back once again for hosting duties.

Over eight weeks of shows, the judges’ Dream Teams of 10 will be narrowed down until only one stands as the newest AGT champion and takes home the $250,000 cash prize. That act will also give their mentor the first coach’s win in AGT history. In the four qualifiers, 10 acts performed with one receiving the week’s Golden Buzzer and five others advanced to this next round based on an audience vote.

Below, read our minute-by-minute “AGT: Fantasy League” recap of episode 5 to find out what happened Monday, January 29 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. Then be sure to sound off in the comments section about your favorite acts on NBC’s reality TV show and who you think will ultimately become the newest AGT champion.

8:03 p.m. – Terry explained that in this round of the competition, only three acts from tonight’s 10 performers will advance to “The Finals.” Those three acts will compete for the top spot from the voting audience or for one of two Golden Buzzer decisions from the judges’ table. In control of the button tonight were Howie and Mel, who had freedom to choose their own act or in a steal from one of the other Dream Teams.

8:05 p.m. – Kicking off the night was Kristy Sellars from Team Howie with newfound confidence following her wildly successful showing in the first round. She promised that tonight she’d put on “a whole new story and a whole new show” that is in celebration of her son. Heidi called the routine “absolute perfection” because she’s “such an amazing athlete” with a great imagination. Mel noted “the precision” of her performance, Simon admitted that she put on something new and unique and it was “perfection,” and Howie begged the audience to vote for her.

8:12 p.m. – Loren Allred was thrilled to still be in the competition and working with Simon as part of his Dream Team because of how much support he’s given her since they first met. Tonight she performed “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in hopes of extending her journey toward this season’s crown. Following a standing ovation from the judges and the audience, Simon called her vocal a “masterclass,” Heidi said she gave the entire room “all the feels,” and Mel called her voice “to die for.” Mel said that she would have chosen a different song for her because with something else she could have had everyone in the audience crying.

8:23 p.m. – Seeking his second win after becoming the “AGT All Stars” champion, Aidan Bryant knows that his title is on the line and he needs to be “literally perfect” in order to continue on. Tonight, Heidi said she gets “choked up” when he performs because she knows how bad he wants it. Mel was “speechless, honestly” and Simon jumped in to say that “this performance was in a league of its own,” calling it “dangerous and brilliant,” but before he could finish Mel jumped back in with an “oh come on” and hit the Golden Buzzer! That meant that Aidan would advance to “The Finals” as a member of Mel’s Dream Team, leaving Heidi in tears over the loss of one of her favorite acts.

8:34 p.m. – With one artist already lost, Team Heidi continued with the new performance from singer Enkh-Erdene. Tonight she wanted him to leave behind country music and surprise the audience with something totally new. That new path forward was with the classic ballad “Always on My Mind.” Heidi called him a “class act” with a voice that is “so beautiful and so soothing.” Simon differed, wishing that the track was “more exciting” because it was “a bit loungey.” Howie agreed, pointing out that it wasn’t a stand out that would be worth the final prize money. Mel complimented his voice and advised that he sticks to “what you know best,” meaning the country music like last time.

8:43 p.m. – Both Howie and Mel assisted in the newest magic routine from Ana DeGuzman. Tonight she thought that she should do something bigger for the stage this time, but her advice from Howie was to take the risk by sticking to what she knows best and keep it on close-up magic. During the course of tonight’s act, Mel was forgetting some of the basics in questions that Anna was asking her. At one point, Anna told her that “it’s okay, she’s pretty.” Later she cracked a second joke at Mel’s expense, acting surprised that “she can read.” At one point, Heidi uttered a “that’s rude” under the breath in Mel’s defense and the audience cringed and booed. Then, once the act was complete, Anna made a third joke about how maybe she should have chosen Heidi to be her assistant instead, to which Howie immediately told her to “shh.” Howie said that Anna “took a risk tonight” for a “smaller illusion.” Heidi was honest that there “was a lot of talking” and she was hurt by what she said to Mel. Simon and Mel came to Anna’s defense by saying that she was kidding with Mel. Mel went further to say that “it was really good” what she accomplished on stage.

8:57 p.m. – Tonight the Vardanyan Brothers had to step it up following a first round performance that Simon said wasn’t as good as what he had seen from them before. Mel worked with them on bigger stage production as they struggled to get on the same page with a routine they’ve only ever done once before. In the end of their routine, the brothers were attempting to balance on the tips of two knives right in front of the judges – when they fell out of the trick the first time, they tried a second time. In this attempt, they successfully balanced on the edge of the knives in what can only be seen as one of the greatest single tricks in AGT history. Mel congratulated them on a trick that made her feel “physically sick.” Howie acknowledged that even when things don’t go perfectly, the audience sees how tough something is and the second attempt was amazing. Simon said they’re “completely and utterly nuts,” but they gave themselves a shot for “carrying on.”

9:11 p.m. – With Howie wondering if he should have hit the Golden Buzzer for the previous act, Team Mel’s Ghetto Kids took the stage for their own chance to leave an impression. They ended tonight’s routine to their own original song by taking a group selfie with the judges. Howie called them “incredibly talented and incredibly joyful.” Heidi said that she “loves the vibe” they bring and Simon thinks that they came to the stage with a lot of pressure on them among the other groups and still it “was everything this show should be.”

9:20 p.m. – Kodi Lee returned to the stage once again for his own chance to become a two-time winner following his first round performance where he sang an original track for the first time. On the heels of that success, Kodi decided to sing another new song that he wrote for his mom, “Journey of You and I.” Simon called it “a huge step up” for Kodi to sing his own material two times in a row. Heidi said the song was “a beautiful love letter” and Howie sees Kodi as “such a gift” to the show and “to talent” in general. Despite feeling like he has strong acts on his team already, Howie knew that he could “always use more” so he got up to hit the Golden Buzzer, sending Kodi to “The Finals” as the newest member of Team Howie and an ex-member of Team Simon.

9:33 p.m. – Ahead of his performance, Howie told Preacher Lawson that his very first set that he ever performed on AGT was one of the best stand up comic sets he’s seen on the show. For this set, he wanted to bring the energy back to that by telling jokes about his family life, specifically his relationship to his mom. Howie clarified that he thinks no other act is as difficult as comedy because comedians “bare their soul.” Heidi called Preacher one of the funniest they’ve ever had on the show and Mel said that she was “smiling and laughing hysterically.” Simon closed with calling him “brilliant at what you do” and it’s clear he’s gone out on the road to “build a base.”

9:44 p.m. – The final performance of the night was Team Simon’s Pack Drumline who saw their second opportunity as “coming to battle” in order to win. Simon was on his feet for their performance because even if they feel like an underdog that he thinks they can win. Mel thought they had timing issues that “were a little bit off,” but she says she still would have given them the Golden Buzzer because of their energy. Heidi agreed that the “energy was extra” and it was their best performance and Howie says they are the “most in it to win it” act in the competition.

9:55 p.m. – With two acts already through, the eight remaining acts were narrowed down to a top three of audience votes, but only one of them would actually advance. The three acts that earned the most votes were the Vardanyan Brothers, Pack Drumline, and Loren Allred. Of those three, the one that got the most votes and the only one to advance to “The Finals” is Pack Drumline!
