'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Sneak Peek: The Secret Warriors Invade Hydra

Next Tuesday’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a game-changer. The Secret Warriors are called in for the first time and all hell is about to break loose. We got Chloe Bennet to give us the debrief on how Daisy’s team did and how she stands up as a leader. Plus, check out the above exclusive clip of the team’s first attack on a Hydra base.

The scene is a textbook Agents action sequence. We get to see Daisy leading the charge, Lincoln using his powers in creative new ways, and Joey sharing a quiet moment with Yo-Yo before taking out a squad of Hydra soldiers. Things are looking pretty good — for now.

“It’s very exciting to have the team together for the fist time,” says Bennet. “This is something we’ve been teasing for the whole season.” The Secret Warriors are brought together under less-than-ideal circumstances, “Coulson needs our help and there’s really no other options. We’re not sure they’re ready. Daisy obviously has some reservations about bringing the team together because of the vision she saw, but,” she offers a silver lining, “considering all the odds, I think we do a pretty good job.”

How is Daisy as a leader? Bennet says she’s a born leader. “She’s got an incredibly strong sense of self. I think she’s ruthless and has tons of empathy for other people. I think she doesn’t feel bad about admitting when she’s wrong, which are all great characteristics.” At the same time, though, she doesn’t have the experience that Coulson or May have and that’s tough when you’re in the business of saving the world. It’s all about “making sure you know what’s right for, first, the group as a whole, and then, for mankind.”

Surprisingly, given that she’s been playing the role for a while now, she was a little shaky about this episode. “I was more nervous about shooting the scenes where I was a leader than I expected to be.” Bennet channeled that energy: “As an actor, if you’re sick that day, you use it. That’s what the character’s dealing with today, that’s what I’m dealing with today, I’m going to use it.” Whose nervousness was it? Perhaps her characters emotions bled into her own? “Daisy’s the youngest S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, but she’s put into this leadership role over people who are older than her and that’s kind of crazy.” But Bennet believes in Daisy. “I think she’s incredibly capable and I think she learns a lot going forward.”

It helps that she’s had great mentors. Coulson’s empathy and May’s pragmatism balance one another. “I think being protégé of both of them has been a really great thing for her. She’s turned out as a hybrid of both.” Coulson and Daisy bond over their hypersensitivity to others, “Coulson is incredibly empathetic, even towards the bad guys.” From May she learns how to control her feelings. “Daisy’s incredibly emotional; she wears her heart on her sleeve and she can’t stifle her emotions or how she’s feeling as easily as May can.” Not that May is unfeeling, though. “May commonly gets mistaken for not feeling emotions. I think she feels them, but almost like Tai Chi, she takes that feeling and she puts that energy towards being a badass.”

Of course, what we really all want is for Daisy to give a heroic battlecry like “Avengers Assemble!” What’s the Secret Warriors equivalent? “It’s like this, ‘AWWWRRK UWWAWWWK!'” she laughs, sounding kind of like an enraged ostrich. They haven’t come up with an official cry yet, but Bennet says they definitely need one. “It should be all of our cultures incorporated, for sure. We have a Columbian, we have a Mexican, we have Australian, we have Chinese.” United Nations Assemble!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m on ABC.
