Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Clark Gregg had said the multiverse could allow Agent Phil Coulson to potentially return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“[Coulson isn’t dead] in every timeline,” Gregg said during an interview on the Love in the Time of Hydra: Agents of SHIELD Pod. “Look, you are playing in a Multiverse scenario in various timelines without you being like, ‘I don’t know, there’s many Multiverses here’ . . . People are very upset about whether things are canon [or not], and I love that Kevin [Feige] is like ‘The Oz.'”

The conversation soon shifted to the future MCU installment Avengers: Secret Wars as Gregg addressed how Marvel fans want to see an Agent Coulson variant appear in the highly-anticipated event. “That’s really sweet,” Gregg said. “I just love that there’s a connection with Coulson, I think, because he was such an early part of the thing and the kind of human face of the world. But the canon of people that they feel that way about has grown and there’s plenty. It’s hard for me to go, ‘Yeah, it’s alright, I had 10 great years, maybe 12,’ but yes.”

Gregg made his debut as Agent Coulson in 2008’s Iron Man which launched the MCU. Though the character died at the hands of Loki in 2012’s The Avengers, Coulson was resurrected in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. when it first aired on ABC in 2013. Since its conclusion in 2020, the canon of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been debated heavily among MCU fans as the series became increasingly disconnected from events in the big screen releases.

Will Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. make a comeback?

Recently, Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum teased a possible S.H.I.E.L.D. revival following the success of X-Men ’97 on Disney+ and the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again. “[Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.] is probably the next show that [we’re] going to kind of revisit and revive . . . a really strong . . . and one of my favorite pockets of our universe and our fandom,” Winderbaum said to Agents of Fandom on YouTube. “And . . . you never know is the answer!”

All seven seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are now streaming on Disney+.
