After narrowly surviving a brush with Scarlet Witch Wanda Maximoff in 2021’s WandaVision, Kathryn Hahn’s evil spell-caster Agatha Harkness is getting her very own Marvel show in Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.

News of the show’s arrival landed just months after WandaVision ended, thanks, in part, to Agatha’s instant popularity among viewers. The character’s new stand-alone series promises to share many of the same ingredients as its predecessor, including some familiar faces and a darkly comic flavour.

It’ll also form part of Phase Five of Marvel’s ongoing cinematic universe.

What else do we know? Keep scrolling as we open Agatha’s spellbook to find out what she has in store for her debut Disney+ series.

Agatha: Darkhold Diaries doesn’t have a set release date just yet. However, the series is scheduled to land at some point in late 2024, potentially in the lead-up to Halloween.

Given its supernatural storyline, this feels like a good placement for the series and also matches up with a proposed 19 September 2024 air date that was spotted within a digital copy of a United States Copyright Office document that eagle-eyed MCU fans discovered online.

Like every Marvel project, the show will debut on Disney+, and is believed to consist of nine episodes.

In addition to Kathryn Hahn returning as Agatha Harkness, Darkhold Diaries will also feature Parks and Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza as Rio Vidal, a new villainous character and member of Agatha’s coven.

Heartstopper’s Joe Locke joins the series as a familiar called Billy Kaplan, a character that’ll no doubt be familiar to readers of the Young Avengers comics, with Patti LuPone as Lilia Calderu, a decades-old witch who joins covens with Agatha.

Former Saturday Night Live cast member Sasheer Zamata will play Jennifer Kale, a powerful sorceress from the Marvel comics universe, with Ali Ahn and Maria Dizzia also reported to be playing witches.

Miles Gutierrez-Riley will also appear as Hulkling, boyfriend to Locke’s character Billy.

Former WandaVision stars Debra Jo Rupp, Emma Caulfield Ford, David Payton, David Lengel, Asif Ali, Amos Glick and Brian Brightman will also star, alongside Kate Ford as Agatha’s mum Evanora.

Okwui Okpokwasili is also confirmed to appear in an as-yet-undisclosed role.

Despite filming on the series wrapping in May 2023, little is known about the story of this WandaVision spin-off.

Having undergone two title changes (it started as House of Harkness and evolved into Coven of Chaos before landing on Darkhold Diaries), details of the show’s first episode recently found their way online, shedding some much-needed light onto Agatha’s solo adventure.

According to a synopsis included within an American Copyright Notice listing, “In the first episode, we see Agatha finally break out of a spell she has been trapped in.

“She can’t wait to go back to her old murderous ways only to find that she is powerless,” it continues. “The only way forward for her is to embark on a perilous quest to get her powers back with the help of an unlikely friend or two.”

So far, that’s all we have to go off. However, it sets things up nicely for a series that’s bound to be full of misdirection and twist surprises.

Not yet. But as soon as one is conjured up, you’ll find it here, so check back soon.
