Ricky Gervais had After Life fans in a spin after revealing he has written the first episode of series three.

The comedy-drama about a man whose life is turned upside down when his wife dies has been a huge hit, and fans had been crossing their fingers that a third series would arrive fast.

So there was excitement all round when Gervais tweeted a picture of him holding up a script of episode one, with the caption: “Cheers.”

When one fan asked if the picture meant the entire series was finished, Gervais responded: “Just ep 1.

“The rest are getting there though.”

He later shared that he was particularly proud of one gag he has penned for the new series.

“Just wrote a joke for Brian Gittins to tell in #AfterLife3,” he said.

“It’s so good I’m counting it as a day’s work.”

Fans are now counting the days until they get another instalment of the Netflix show.

“Can't wait for this,” said one person on Twitter. “The first two really helped me understand my grief when I lost 3 members of my family some years ago now.”

“I'm delighted but I will start stockpiling tissues now!” said another.

“My life just got a whole lot better. Thank you legend,” one pleased viewer posted.

“If I was a dog my tail would be wagging right now!” tweeted another.

After Life premiered on Netflix in 2019 and a second series followed this year.

In May, Gervais told fans it would be back for a third run.

“Because so many of you watched #AfterLife2 so quickly and made it Number 1 again, the nice people at @Netflix have suggested that I get off my fat arse and do another season. This is all your fault,” he said.

The series also stars Mandeep Dhillon, Tom Basden, Ashley Jensen and Penelope Wilton.
