After 35 Years on ‘Today,’ Willard Scott Retires

It’s the end of an era on The Today Show. Weatherman and television personality Willard Scott is retiring after 35 years on the show and 65 years at NBC. Scott started at NBC as a page in 1950 and was actually a part of the very first Today broadcast before officially being hired in 1980. In addition to being the first ever Ronald McDonald, Scott has been involved in many iconic moments on Today, from his hilarious character Carmen Miranda to his stolen smooch with first lady Barbara Bush. Broadcasting from his ranch in Virginia, Scott received kind words from Today anchors past and present, and from Barbara Bush, Gene Shalit, and Tim Smucker of J.M. Smucker Co., whose brand paired with Scott for his well-known centenarian birthday wishes. But the biggest honor of all came from his name being immortalized on a block in Midtown Manhattan, the newly christened Willard Scott Way. Sitting with Al Roker, Scott displayed the signature charisma that’s captured our attention over the years.
