Adrienne Bailon and Israel Houghton have been together since 2016 and have never been shy about sharing their love and dedication for each other.

While many know Houghton as Bailon’s husband, he has plenty of fans of his own. Houghton is a very successful gospel singer and has worked with Bailon on various entertainment projects in the past.

In a 2016 interview with PEOPLE, Houghton said that one of the things that most attracted him to Bailon was that she makes him laugh. “I was in a season in my life that laughter really spoke to me. She’s my everything,” he said.

Houghton uses his Instagram page as a way for fans to get a glimpse at his everyday life, which includes spending plenty of time with his family, going on tour and creating new music.

He’s a gospel singer

Houghton is a successful Christian gospel singer — so successful that he has been nominated for 17 Grammy awards and won six of them. Also known as Israel & New Breed, he is a songwriter, music producer and worship warrior/leader, according to his website. He has been playing music since 1997.

In a 2022 interview with CBN, Houghton said that his first real experience with worship music came when he was 19 playing drums in the church band.

He is a dad

Houghton is a dad to five children, four from his previous marriage and one with Bailon. In his first marriage, Houghton welcomed two daughters, named Mariah and Milan, and two sons, named Israel and Jordan.

In August 2022, he welcomed his first child with Bailon, a son named Ever. The couple used a surrogate to have their baby, and Bailon opened up about the experience to PEOPLE, saying, “I got to be honest, even the process of surrogacy can be quite nerve-wracking. Somebody else has your child with them. We call it extreme babysitting for nine months."

The couple kept the surrogacy quiet because, as Bailon explained, they didn’t want to have to deal with anyone else’s questions, concerns or input. “I just wanted to have peace and have a little joy that I could hold for myself every day and something to look forward to,” she told PEOPLE.

The two were friends before they began dating

In a 2016 interview with PEOPLE, Bailon opened up about how her relationship with Houghton started, sharing that the two had been friends for a long time before they began a romantic relationship. She explained that when Houghton was officially divorced, she set him up with some of her friends, and none of the dates worked out.

The two were hanging out at a party together a while later when a friend approached them and said, “You guys have old love," she told PEOPLE.

“We both heard that, and it had an impact on us. That was such a special choice of words, and I felt it was correct. I felt a connection to her that I still can’t define,” Houghton said.

Paris is a special place for them

Houghton and Bailon have made some pretty special memories in Paris. The two got engaged there in 2016, a few months after they started dating. Bailon shared the news on Instagram at the time with a photo of her sparkling engagement ring in front of the Eiffel Tower.

Houghton also shared the news on Instagram, writing, “I have seen and felt the essence of God's grace through the life, the kindness and the courage of this woman.”

A few years later, in 2019, the two made things official and tied the knot in the French capital. “I genuinely just feel so blessed and grateful,” Bailon told PEOPLE after the wedding. “I’ve never felt what I feel right now. I can’t even describe what it is, but it’s such a peace mixed with total excitement.” The two celebrated with an intimate group of close friends.

In May 2023, the couple took their son to Paris to introduce him to the city. Alongside a series of photos on Instagram, Houghton wrote, “Taking our son to the most magical place … meant so much to us!” He went on to say that he and Bailon took Ever to the Eiffel Tower carousel where they had taken their wedding photos a few years earlier, and even brought him to their wedding venue.

Religion has been a huge part of his life for a long time

Since Houghton is a Christian gospel singer, it should come as no surprise that religion is an important part of his life. His faith helped him get through a difficult childhood and tough family experience, he explained in his 2022 interview with CBN. He revealed that his mother was white and his father was Black, and said that being biracial made it extremely difficult for him to be accepted by his mother’s family in the segregated town in Iowa where he grew up.

Eventually, Houghton ended up turning to religion to find comfort in his pain and struggle with acceptance. He said that his connection with God helped him realize he had a purpose in life.

“Okay, I didn’t just sneak into the earth, I was created for something great,” he said. “The more I dwell on that, the more I meditate on that, the more I share that with people who want to hear it, the better I feel about why I’m here.”

He also said that through his worship, he hopes to “give good news to people” and to help them “experience hope.”

He’s a supportive partner and hands-on dad

In a 2022 interview on Amazon Live, Bailon praised Houghton for being such a great father. “He’s so awesome and so hands-on,” she said. “When he’s here, I normally take the night shifts and then he’ll let me sleep in all morning, which I love, and he’ll cuddle with the baby. He’s just there if the baby starts wanting a bottle. He’s on it.”

A glance at Houghton’s Instagram makes it clear that his family means everything to him. Even his bio says, “Honored to be the husband of @adriennebailon.” His feed is full of photos of Bailon and his son.
