These Adidas Sneakers Cost $1,000
Rick Owens is a name that strikes fear in the hearts of wallets everywhere, but his latest sneaker with Adidas is taking it to a whole new level. The designer has been working with the sportswear brand for a few years now, most notably creating a runner with a two part sole, a slick upper, and a price tag that approaches $800.
It's one of the most recognizable vanity sneakers used by SoHo steppers to prove they've got it like that, without crossing the line into pure designer footwear.
To date, with the exception of a not-exceptionally-well-received riff on the Superstar, Owens has only played off that running silhouette. But this season the partnership is digging deeper into Adidas' archive to create a look that blends the two parties' styles pretty seamlessly. There's a catch, though.
It costs $1,000.
The Rick Owens x Adidas Mastodon features an upper that looks remarkably like the Adidas ProModel, a sneaker that dates back to 1965. Owens has taken that upper and fit it entirely in premium calf leathers, bringing goat leather to the lining, all while keeping the rubber cap toe in place. The newly upgraded upper sits on top of a characteristically huge Rick Owens sole.
Owens' sneakers almost always feature comically large rubber soles; it's become something of a calling card for the designer. The Mastodons carry that tradition in tonal rubber with a signature toothy outsole.

Here's the thing about that price tag: When it comes to Rick Owens' own sneakers, $1,000 is actually on the lower end. His much-beloved Geobasket, and the litigated-out-of-existence Dunk, can fetch sums up to $4,000. So it's all relative. In the grand scheme of things, a grand for a pair of sneakers is way up there. For Rick? It ain't so bad. That's probably why the Mastodons are already sold out in Europe.
