Adam Sandler is officially starring in “Happy Gilmore 2”

Netflix confirmed the rumors during their Upfront presentation to advertisers on Wednesday.

Adam Sandler will reprise his role as the hotheaded hockey player turned pro golfer in Happy Gilmore 2, Netflix announced. The news came during the streamer's second Upfront presentation to advertisers on Wednesday.

Rumors of a sequel have been swirling since Christopher McDonald, who played Sandler's cocky rival Shooter McGavin in the 1996 original, said in a March interview that a script was in the works.

"I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, 'McDonald, you're gonna love this,'" he told Cleveland radio's Ken Carman Show. "I said, 'What?' He says, 'How about that,' and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2. Maybe you should cut that out because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, 'Well, that would be awesome.' So it's in the works. Fans demand it, damn it!"

Then in April, Sandler's friend and frequent collaborator, Drew Barrymore, revealed on her eponymous talk show that she had contacted him about the rumors after hearing McDonald's interview.

"I want it. I need it, and I stayed up last night with my daughter watching Billy Madison," Barrymore said. "I sent Sandler a video of that, and then he sent me another video back, and I'm waiting to see if he's confirming about the Happy Gilmore 2 script."

Later, Barrymore appeared to read a message from Sandler on her phone that seemingly confirmed a sequel was in the works. "This just in, I have breaking news," she told her audience. "I'll just say this, from my source, that it is in process.

She added, "There is a process, and that process is in process."

Happy Gilmore was the second feature Sandler wrote and starred in following 1995's Billy Madison. In the endlessly quotable comedy, he stars as a wannabe hockey player with a wicked slap shot but limited skating skills. When he accidentally discovers he can drive a golf ball over 400 yards, he reluctantly uses his newfound superpower to compete in pro tournaments, hoping to earn enough money to save his grandma's house from the bank.

Where Happy will be nearly 30 years later is anyone's guess. Netflix did not provide plot details, a release date, or other details in its presentation. Either way, Sandler can count on us waiting for him in our Netflix queues.
