Adam Driver On Balancing Tentpoles Like ‘Star Wars’ & Indie Pics Like ‘Paterson’
Following his breakout role as acerbic but sensitive boyfriend Adam Sackler to Lena Dunham’s Hannah Horvath on HBO’s Girls, Juilliard graduate Adam Driver has been in demand for his gravitas, nuanced talents and statuesque physique which he brings to his guy roles. No doubt, he can certainly play dark, and we’ve seen the fierce side of him on Girls in his domination over Hannah during the early part of the series, as well as his dimensional portrayal of Star Wars conflicted soul Kylo Ren.
In Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson, Driver shows his sensitive side, as a sublime bus driver poet by the name of Paterson who lives in Paterson, NJ, with his artist wife. Paterson, as a person, no doubt brings to mind William Carlos Williams, who wrote a book of poetry entitled Paterson, about the history, people and essence of Paterson, NJ. In a year that’s been bogged down by a cutthroat presidential election that’s yielded a divisive outcome, Paterson’s life is a throwback to simpler Americana times when we all could just be. Driver received rave reviews for his performance coming out of the Cannes Film Festival.
Here, in a conversation with Deadline Senior Editor Dominic Patten at a screening of Paterson last week, Driver expounds on playing every corner of cinema from indie fare to the highest grossing-film at the U.S. box office, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Take a look.
