Adam Demos and Sarah Shahi have chemistry — on and off-screen.

The Sex/Life costars met in August 2020 while filming their Netflix drama series, and right away, there was a connection.

“I said, ‘Well, that’s a tall drink of water,’ ” Shahi told PEOPLE about her first impression of the actor. “I was really blown away with him. We met in the makeup trailer and we just got on instantly.”

Over the next several months, their connection only deepened and by December, they were inseparable. On New Year's Eve, Demos and Shahi hinted at their romance when they both shared the same photo on Instagram — a black-and-white shot of them lying in bed, playfully covering their faces.

Since then, the couple have opened up more about their real-life love story.

Calling her a “goddess,” Demos told PEOPLE that he loves “everything” about Shahi. “I’m her biggest fan,” he said. “I think she’s exceptional in all aspects of life.”

They met on the set of Sex/Life

Demos and Shahi first crossed paths while filming the first season of Sex/Life. In the Netflix series, the pair star as ex-lovers who become entangled in a steamy love triangle years later.

Filming for the show began in August 2020, and the following month, Demos shared a photo on Instagram of the two hanging out on set. “Billie and Brad,” he wrote in the caption, referencing their characters’ names.

Speaking to PEOPLE in 2021, Shahi detailed what it was like working with Demos, sharing that there was an immediate connection between them.

“We had the exact same taste in music,” she said. “We had the same taste in whiskey and tequilas and I was really blown away by him just as a person and all I knew was that I wanted more.”

The actress continued, calling it a “privilege” to work with him and praising his acting. “You’re only as good as your scene partner,” she said. “He’s amazing in the show.”

They confirmed their romance in 2021

On Dec. 31, 2020, Demos and Shahi gave the first glimpse of their relationship when they shared the same black-and-white photo of them on Instagram. In the shot, the two appear to be cozied up together in bed with their shirts pulled over their faces.

Demos captioned the snap, “Rats NYE.” Shahi then seemingly responded with her caption, “Happy new year 🎈Xo The 🐀.”

Although neither explicitly mentioned their romance, Demos confirmed it 10 days later with a birthday post for Shahi.

“Happy bday my baby I f*#kin love you. You’re everything,” he wrote on Instagram alongside photos of them at an apple orchard.

Shahi says her values align with Demos'

When they initially started working together, Shahi was married to Shameless actor, Steve Howey, with whom she shares three children. However, they had already split up by the time she and Demos started dating.

During an interview on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, the actress clarified the timeline, explaining that she and Howey filed for divorce in May, three months before filming for Sex/Life began.

“We were together for a very long time,” she said of her 11-year marriage and 18-year relationship with Howey. “That's not a failure. That was a long time. But the last 10 years we really did struggle.”

The Rookie star also shared that although her real-life romance with Demos seemed fast to the public, that wasn’t necessarily the case.

“It was over time, it was getting to know him as a person and seeing how aligned our values were,” she said.

As for his values, Shahi expressed admiration for how Demos treats women.

“I also really respected how he talked about his mom and how he talked about women,” she explained. “There was just so much that I started seeing over time that made me go, ‘Oh, you're kind of everything I've ever wanted.’ And that's when we started being together.”

They made their red carpet debut at the People’s Choice Awards

Nearly a year after their first Instagram post as a couple, Demos and Shahi attended a major Hollywood event side-by-side in December 2021. The pair arrived together at the People’s Choice Awards to support their nominated show, Sex/Life.

Demos wore a checkered suit, while Shahi donned a slinky metallic dress with a thigh-high slit and off-the-shoulder detailing. The actors were all smiles as they posed for the cameras with Shahi letting out a big laugh at one point as Demos kept his arm around her waist.

They keep their work and home lives separate

During an interview with Haute Living, Demos shared that, despite some emotionally intense scenes, he and Shahi are able to keep their work and home separate.

“It’s weirdly quite easy because that’s how we met,” he said. “What’s home is just us and our relationship, and going to work becomes about making sure we do the characters justice.”

He went on to explain that they’ve become good at keeping those lines divided but noted that, if anything, their off-screen romance only helps.

“When I do scenes with her, I love it because I’m such a fan of her as an actor and there are some scenes where we have to show chemistry, and it feels very effortless sometimes,” he said. “It makes it kind of easier.”

Shahi echoed that sentiment in a conversation on The Jennifer Hudson Show.

“It makes my job so much easier because if it's a love scene or it's a fight scene or whatever it is, all I have to do is look at him, and the words become real,” she told host Jennifer Hudson. “I don’t have to pretend, which is nice!”

Their relationship is “hotter” in real-life

During a cast interview with Access Hollywood, Demos and Shahi were asked if their off-screen romance is “even hotter” than the relationship between their Sex/Life characters.

“I think so,” Shahi replied, to which Demos agreed, “For sure.”

Still, she revealed that she isn't attracted to his character.

Shahi added, "I would never be into him if he were Brad. I’m so thankful he’s actually the furthest thing from Brad in that sense, but I don’t know, I guess we’re pretty hot."

They enjoy celebrating each other

Throughout their romance, Demos and Shahi haven’t been shy about their online PDA. They frequently share photos of each other on social media, giving fans a look into their life together.

In 2021, Shahi wrote a heartfelt birthday message to Demos.

“Not exactly sure how two people on opposite sides of the world could have more in common, were meant to meet, were meant to be together. But I do know I met my soulmate,” she captioned a carousel of pictures of them on Instagram.

She continued, “I do know I found my forever. I do know I’ve never loved deeper, harder, more ferociously. I do know I’m overly grateful for him. I do know I’ve loved him for a thousand lifetimes before and will love him for a thousand lifetimes more. Happy birthday my baby ❤️.”

Demos has also shared several sweet tributes to Shahi. “Happy bday to my little angel!!” he wrote on Instagram in January of 2024. “Beyond grateful I get to do this life with you ❤️❤️.”
