Adam Anders has been around the block a couple of times. He was the lead executive music producer on Fox’s musical/comedy/drama series “Glee.” He also served as a producer on “The Prom” for director Ryan Murphy that featured Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and James Corden for Netflix. He’s a three-time Grammy nominee who has sold over 100 million records and worked with artists ranging from the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus to Andy Grammer and CeeLo Green. His music has been heard in film productions including “High School Musical,” “The Wedding Planner,” “Captain Underpants” and “Rock of Ages.”

But lately, Anders has been focusing his attention on a different project: “Journey to Bethlehem,” a live-action Christmas musical retelling of the classic story of Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus that’s currently playing in theaters in limited release this holiday season. Its lone big name is Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas, who portrays Herod. Anders directed, co-produced and co-wrote the Sony Pictures film that had a modest $6 million budget. The film features a dozen new original songs, including the breakout “Mother To A Savior and King” (written by Adam Anders, Nikki Anders and Peer Astrom and sung by Fiona Palomo, who portrays Mary in the film). Watch the video link to the song above.

“Mother To A Savior and King” is being pushed for Oscar consideration in the Best Original Song category. And while it’s surely a longshot competing against the likes of “What Was I Made For?” and “I’m Just Ken” from “Barbie,” “Keep It Movin'” from “The Color Purple,” “This Wish” from “Wish” and “Road to Freedom” from “Rustin” (among other contenders), it’s reassuring to think an outsider from a small but energetic feature might have a shot.

“Journey to Bethlehem” is described as “the story of a young women carrying an unimaginable responsibility. A young man torn between love and honor. A jealous king who will stop at nothing to keep his crown.” It weaves weaves classic Christmas melodies with humor, faith and new pop songs in a retelling of the greatest story ever told.
