Ad-Rock From The Beastie Boys Got Drunk and Failed an Audition for Oliver Stone's 'The Doors'

Somewhere in between releasing the classic hip hop albums Paul’s Boutique and Check Your Head with the Beastie Boys, Adam Horovitz — aka Ad-Rock — began pursuing an acting career. In 1989, he played a young troublemaker from LA in the film Lost Angels, and a year later, he went in to audition for Oliver Stone’s film about Jim Morrison and The Doors.

His meeting with Stone didn’t go so well.

“I was definitely stoned, and as I walked in I looked at him and I was like, ‘You’re not going to cast me in this movie, right?’” Horovitz told The New York Times in a story published over the weekend. “He’s like, ‘No, I don’t think so.’”

Horovitz gets some redemption of sorts in Noah Baumbach’s upcoming movie While We’re Young, in which he co-stars as, of all things, a sweater-wearing stay-at-home dad. On Monday, Baumbach told Yahoo Movies that he’d been wanting to work with Horovitz, with whom he is friends, since at least his 2010 film Greenberg, but the rapper wasn’t available at the time.

“At this point, I know which of my friends can act,” the director said. “I knew he’d be great.”

Baumbach cast him alongside Ben Stiller, who plays a disillusioned documentarian, and the director’s instincts proved correct: Seeing Ad-Rock sporting an infant in a Baby Bjorn is one of the most disconcerting and delightful images in the film, which hits theaters on Friday.
