Actress Shirley Anne Field, from “Alfie” and “The Entertainer”, Dead at 87: She 'Will Be Greatly Missed'

The star's family said they'll remember her "unbreakable spirit and her amazing legacy"

British actress Shirley Anne Field, known for films like 1966's Alfie, has died of natural causes, her family announced Monday. She was 87.

"It is with great sadness that we are sharing the news that Shirley Anne Field passed away peacefully on Sunday ... surrounded by her family and friends," the family said in a statement, according to BBC News and The Guardian.

They added, "Shirley Anne will be greatly missed and remembered for her unbreakable spirit and her amazing legacy spanning more than five decades on stage and screen."

Born on June 27, 1936, in London, Field first worked as a model during the 1950s. By the latter half of that decade, she began transitioning into acting roles.

Some of her earliest film credits include the 1956 productions Loser Takes All and It's A Wonderful World. In 1959, she secured her first major role by starring in the film Horrors of the Black Museum.

It wasn't until the next decade that Field's fame truly blossomed. Her role as Tina Lapford in the 1960 film The Entertainer, in which she starred opposite Laurence Olivier, solidified her celebrity status. During that year, Field starred in a eight different projects.

On the small screen, she took on roles in Madson, Where the Heart Is, Waking the Dead and more. In terms of live productions, Field is known for her work as a part of the casts of The Cemetery Club and Five Blue Hair Ladies Sitting on a Green Park Bench.

Some of Field's most notable films included Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, The War Lover and My Beautiful Laundrette. Her famous costars included Steve McQueen, Robert Wagner, Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier.
