A Controversial Choice
Jane The Virgin star Gina Rodriguez is in hot water on Tuesday after she posted a video to her Instagram stories singing the n-word. The actress was singing along to The Fugee's song "Ready Or Not" while in the make up chair, and said the lyrics "Voodoo, I could do what you do, believe me. N*ggas give me heebie-jeebies."
She eventually took the video down after it was up for a few hours on her stories.
A Quick Apology... Sort Of
She eventually issued an apology, also to her Instagram stories.
"I just wanted to reach out and apologize. I am sorry. I am sorry if I offended anyone by singing along to the Fugees, to a song I love, I grew up on. I love Lauryn Hill and I really am sorry if I offended you."
However, she trended on Twitter and many were quick to call her apology insufficient and showing a lack of understanding or remorse.
Past Controversy
This isn't the first time that Rodriguez has faced criticism for anti-black comments. One instance happened during the Small Foot press tour when interviewer BlogXilla told actress Yara Shahidi "You are just goals for so many young black women," and then Rodriguez cut in with "For so many women, women."
Many pointed out that this correction had a real "all lives matter" tone.
Not The First Backlash
She also drew criticism after an interview with Net-A-Porter when she had a controversial response to the difficulties that black actresses face regarding pay equality.
"I get so petrified in this space talking about equal pay especially when you look at the intersectional aspect of it, right? Where white women get paid more than Black women, Black women get paid more than Asian women, Asian women get paid more than Latina women, and it’s like a very scary space to step into."
