‘The Act’ Trailer: Patricia Arquette Transforms Again in Shocking True Crime Adaptation
After her stellar performance in last year’s series “Escape at Dannemora,” it would be understandable if Patricia Arquette wanted to take a break from playing characters based on real individuals caught up in an unbelievable crime saga outside of their control. Yet, the Oscar-winning actress is back in that mode again, this time on the new Hulu series “The Act.” Arquette plats Dee Dee Blanchard, a Missouri mother caring for a child whose ailments she would tell anyone who’d listen. Her daughter Gypsy (Joey King) has a cheery disposition and is the counterbalance of positivity to her mother’s protective nature.
But, as tends to happen in true crime anthology series, things take a bit of an unexpected turn. Somewhere beyond the meticulous meal preparation and diligent wheelchair pushing, this first look at the series shows how it eventually ends up in a courtroom.

This season is adapted from Michelle Dean’s August 2016 longform Buzzfeed News piece, which highlighted a number of shocking aspects of this case. Dean serves as a showrunner on this season, along with “Channel Zero” creator Nick Antosca. The series also includes AnnaSophia Robb and Chloë Sevigny as part of the main ensemble, with “The Mustang” director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre behind the camera as well. This season is the first part of a planned anthology, with each subsequent group of episodes following a new true-crime tale.
“The Act” is part of a busy half of 2019 for Hulu. The streaming service just debuted its middle school comedy “Pen15,” will bring back its cornerstone Emmy-winner “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and also counts the Lindy West adaptation “Shrill” and George Clooney’s impending version “Catch-22” among its other pre-summer programming additions.
