Would acquiring Zach Ertz make sense for Washington?

The Washington Football Team hit a major home run in 2020 by acquiring tight end Logan Thomas on a cheap contract and having him reach the levels of production that he did. They might have a chance to do the same thing once again this offseason.

Thanks to the salary cap restrictions that many NFL teams will be under due to the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of talented veteran players across the league are likely going to be salary cap casualties, leaving teams with excess cap space to scoop them up on the cheap.

One player that Washington could be looking for is Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz, who MMQB’s Albert Breer sees as a schematic match for D.C.

“I certainly think when we’re talking about the whole greater idea here of what you want to do offensively, Ertz certainly fits into that,” Breer said, via NBC Sports Washington.

Not only would the veteran experience of Ertz allow Washington’s quarterback — whoever that turns out to be — to feel more settled with weapons around him, but the tight end’s versatility would also go along with the position flexibility that offensive coordinator Scott Turner loves.

“When you’re talking about that whole vision for having position flexibility and not knowing where guys are coming out of the huddle, Zach Ertz is ideal for that sort of idea,” Breer said.

There have been no concrete indications that the Eagles are going to move on from Ertz, but his emotional end-of-season press conference and the restrictive cap are strong signs. If he becomes available, a team like Washington certainly knows how good he can be when used in the right way.
