ACMs 2019: Luke Bryan Says Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom Are 'Enjoying Being Engaged'
Luke Bryan is opening up about fellow American Idol judge Katy Perry‘s engagement to Orlando Bloom.
While on the red carpet at the 2019 Academy of Country Music Awards wearing a shiny gold jacket, the “What Makes You Country” singer said that Perry is the “coolest chick on the planet.”
“Obviously her and Orlando have been dating a while. I am so excited for them,” Bryan told PEOPLE. “It’s funny, I come back to the country world and everybody is like, ‘How’s Katy Perry?’ I’m like, ‘She’s the coolest chick on the planet. She’s a dude in a girl’s body. She’s a great person with a great heart.'”
“I’ve gotten to meet Orlando a couple of times and they’re having fun,” he continues. “They’re just enjoying being engaged.”

Bryan, 42, who is nominated for entertainer of the year and single record of the year for his hit “Most People Are Good,” is also scheduled to perform his new song, “Knockin’ Boots” during the show.
Bloom and Perry got engaged in February during a surprise helicopter ride.
“It was very sweet,” Perry shared during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “We went to dinner and I thought we were going to go see some art after dinner but we pulled up to a helicopter.”

However, not every aspect of the proposal ended up going off without a hitch.
“The funny part is we had champagne in the helicopter and the [ring] box was in his pocket and he had written down everything he wanted to say on a note,” she revealed, explaining that the note was meant to divert her attention while he pulled out the ring.
“So I’m reading [the note] but I’m hearing the champagne is broken and the bottle’s everywhere … he’s pulling out this box that’s too big for his coat pocket, rips his coat pocket and his elbow goes into the champagne.”

Despite the mishaps, the proposal ended on a happy note and afterwards the pair “landed on a rooftop [in Los Angeles] — my whole family was there, and all my friends,” Perry recalled. “He did so well.”
The 54th Academy of Country Music Awards are broadcasting live from Las Vegas on Sunday, April 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT on CBS.
